jtoland Posted April 26, 2015 Posted April 26, 2015 Hi guys I was wondering if any one knew if there were any automatic network cable creaters as i am visiualy inpeard and it takes me 30 mins just to create 1 cable Thanks
lmgtfy Posted April 26, 2015 Posted April 26, 2015 I've never come across one before but its a brilliant idea if you could make one for under £100 you would be a rich man that and terminating patch panels would save my fingers too!
jtoland Posted April 26, 2015 Author Posted April 26, 2015 Yeah i know might have a go at making something or atleast a concept for one
dry Posted April 26, 2015 Posted April 26, 2015 Are you talking about an automated crimper? I've never heard of one... I've seen special RJ45 connectors that make the job easier though. One type has a guide plate that you slot each strand into before putting it into the main body of the connector. The other type allows you to push each strand all the way through the plug and the crimper cuts the strands to length. Both of these save your fingers but not necessarily more helpful for the visually impaired.
synaesthesia Posted April 27, 2015 Posted April 27, 2015 As above, there's a good reason you can easily and cheaply buy them ready made! With absolutely no disrespect intended, often you need to work to your abilities. I wouldn't expect a colourblind person to be mixing paints by eye at B&Q after all! I can't see how you could automate something like that without colour recognition devices and some nifty mechanics. You could easily (if you're gifted enough in that way!) prototype that with Lego Mindstorms or similar but technology isn't the answer to everything. The best solution is often the easiest one.
jtoland Posted April 27, 2015 Author Posted April 27, 2015 Yeah i know that but its more for custom lenth cables
JasonNVSD Posted April 27, 2015 Posted April 27, 2015 (edited) The most common mistake I see with hand-made patch cables is using solid core cable. Most RJ45 plugs are designed for stranded cable. Always use stranded cable for patch cables. If you're having trouble aligning the wires in the plug, you may want to look at something called "EZ-RJ45". It requires special plugs (and ideally the matching crimper), but it's the best product I've seen for speeding up cable creation. Edited April 27, 2015 by JasonNVSD
JasonNVSD Posted April 27, 2015 Posted April 27, 2015 (edited) You seen the price of them though Well neither is a cable-making robot. In the US, I see them retailed for $0.47 per plug shipped (0.31 GBP?). I'm not familiar with UK retailers or prices. Edited April 27, 2015 by JasonNVSD add link
MatthewL Posted April 27, 2015 Posted April 27, 2015 Never been one for making custom leads, get the nearest length needed, if it is generally more than 5/10m away from socket my rule is get a point put in. Don't like using more than 10m leads, would rather have a proper job. 1
