Theldron Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 Hi all, Hope everyone is well. Over the last 6 days our file server has crashed 3 times, twice today. Everything runs fine, then it will slow down and stop responding. I have checked event viewer, anti-virus and can see nothing obvious. HP System management says everything is healthy. I have checked the warranty and it expired last month (ahhhhhhh!!!) I am currently watching resource manager. Any other ideas to look for. Cheers Sean
Oaktech Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 I would think it's something memory or HDD related. Is the storage arranged in any kind of fault tolerant way?
fiza Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 (edited) have you checked the batteries on your raid controllers? I had similar and it was the BBU. If you have HP system management installed it should tell you if there are any issues. edit: Sorry didn't read your full explanation. Edited April 21, 2015 by fiza
Theldron Posted April 21, 2015 Author Posted April 21, 2015 (edited) The server has raid setup i think mirrored. The server was purchased and setup by our previous sponsor. My initial thought is that it is memory or hdd issue. But just narrowing it down. when everything says its fine. Edited April 21, 2015 by Theldron
Theldron Posted April 21, 2015 Author Posted April 21, 2015 The only thing I am seeing on HP System Management is "INTEGRATED LIGHTS-OUT NIC".
Joanne Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 might be worth doing a memory test overnight? There is a way to do it in Windows.... pressing F8 when starting up to get the options... memory diagnostic.
zag Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 setup up a backup file server just in case, mirror all the files using robocopy. could be a raid issue.
Theldron Posted April 21, 2015 Author Posted April 21, 2015 I've done a virus scan and I am currently looking at setting up a server backup to NAS tonight.
simpsonj Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 For us, it was a firmware issue. One of our HP Servers would randomly reboot itself for no apparent reason (this was our back up server, so not used during the day). Once we updated the firmware, it's been far better behaved!
Theldron Posted April 21, 2015 Author Posted April 21, 2015 Thinking back it only seems to have happened when I have RDP'd into the server and had to do something. I have linked a monitor to it and stayed off RDP for now and it is running fine (fingers crossed).
ITGuyWestMidlands Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 Check the event logs. Also, check your windows update settings as it waits till you rdp in before it reboots. It could jave done some updates and you remoting in i initiates the reboot to finish installing the updates
m25man Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 Out of warranty! So it's a G6??? Update all the firmware (if you can get a download) Turn off ASR I've seen a network problem cause ASR to reboot an HP server. The only clue was in the iLO logs. The network card stopped passing packets due to a broadcast storm on the network ASR reboots the server when something stops responding. Updating everything and disabling ASR stopped the server from falling over then we were able to locate the storm source.
Theldron Posted April 28, 2015 Author Posted April 28, 2015 I found the problem lay with some corrupt profiles which were around 1GB in size, but there was hardly anything in them. I deleted all profiles and it is fine now. Thanks for all the advice.
