See what is being Deduplicated

Hi

 

I have a server running 2012R2 and Data Deduplication running, and saving me 96.5GB in a primary school!! I was just wondering if there is anyway I can see what is actually duplicated as I feel 96.5GB is rather a lot considering it's only a primary school.

 

Also if anyone else has it, I would be interested to know how much space it is saving you

312GB on Staff Docs

9.9TB on BackUps

221GB on Student Docs (Currently more direct on SAN)

20GB on Admin Shared

383GB on Staff Shared

(All dedup savings above)

 

Only way I've found is by looking at the file sizes, as it'll show as 0 data used on the dedup'd ones

 

No idea on a proper report etc though

It's such an epic tool haha Gets better the more you dedup I find too.

 

Got 13TB of backups within 4TB space on backup server (68% dedup) 9TB free so potentially another 26TB space.

 

36% rate on Staff Docs etc.

That's pretty impressive.

 

So happy when they brought this out, finally can crack down on Teacher A massive folder of resources in there home drive, then copying that across to there own folder in Staff Share they decided to make, and then another teacher coming along and going I like that, and making themselves a folder on the Staff share and copying all the resources into it, and then from there into there Home Drive

Sorry to hijack this thread.... But exactly how does de duplication work... If I go in tomorrow on my file server and click go on de duplication for my file servers what problems should I expect?

 

Does it effect my backups?

 

Or is it what it says on the tin?

I would have loved to run this where I used to work, there was so much of this happening but when I was there we was still running 2003 file servers!

Check the link above your post and it explains how it works and I think mentions backups. How it effects your backups will likely depend on what you use for them, DPM supports it natively and I believe even enforces it automatically to save space while doing backups.
