Spelling/grammar errors do annoy me in general, but the misuse of your/you're bugs me far more than most others do - using apostrophes to pluralise things really gets me too.

 

There's a pub near me which has a sign outside saying talking about the "wine's and beer's", and another saying "all major credit cards excepted" - shouldn't that be "accepted"?! I don't know if the signs reflect the quality of the pub....

They don't... there are some mighty fine pubs near me and none of them write properly. Maybe it's a sign of a good pub?

The thing which confuses me about these errors is that they're not hand-written on paper signs or anything, they're on the big boarding/fascias on the front of the pub, right by the name. Maybe the sign-writers weren't paid to think, just to write whatever they were given.

 

Again on a proper professionally-made sign, a garage near me advertises that they sell strater motors - I might buy one, as my car would appear not to have one...

There are quite a number of people on this forum who find spelling/grammer/punctuation quite challenging and who work in IT because it isn't a job requirement.

 

As someone who offended another member quite badly when I thought I was just making a joke, I'd now like to suggest that we just don't do it anymore.

Hey, I'm not having a dig at anybody. Just pointing out that it annoy's me when the apostrophe is abused's.

 

Our branch of Woolworths has had big signs on their doors for the last six months warning that their "door's are not working and would people please use the other door's".....

Grammar does seem to be lacking in some literature I've seen, but I don't know whether all the emphasis on ict has weakened peoples' skills in this area.

 

I can't write neatly at all, but I never have, my parents blame it on relying on typing too much, but I still have a fairly good command of the english language (as people would put it).

Why is the ability to use language correctly not a requirement for a job in IT?

 

I always re-read letters to colleagues to make sure that they are grammatically correct, and I take even more care checking it if the letter is going to a senior staff member (or an English teacher!).
