Flash updating on Macs

Hi there

 

Flash is a bit of a pain .....it's always being updated.

On our macs they are still a bit behind - we hope to run Parallels and system centre on them soon ( with Yoesmite).

In the meantime can anyone suggest a cheap way of updating Flash on them rather than buying new Remote Desktop software or using Profile Manager ( as we are using Workgroup manager on these older macs). They are on Snow Leopard at the moment ......

You can download a DMG for flash from the Adobe Flash Player Distribution Page. Register if you haven't already and download the DMG for system administrators.

 

From there, you can mount the DMG file and run the PKG installer from inside there. I don't know if Workgroup Manager can do that but if you're using Apple Remote Desktop, that can.

 

To install using the command line, do the following:

 

sudo -i (you will be prompted to enter your password)
hdiutil mount /{pathtodmgfile}/install_flash_player_17_osx_pkg.dmg
installer -pkg /Volumes/Flash\ Player/Install\ Adobe\ Flash\ Player.pkg -target /
hdiutil unmount /Volumes/Flash\ Player/

Or you could setup Munki & MunkiAdmin which you'll be able to use to push out other packages too if you think it'll be worth your while in the future.

Flash is a pain in the butt and Munki so far is working out great at keeping Flash and other programs all up to date for us.

out the box maybe but I uninstalled flash from my iMacs and best move I ever made. Youtube uses HTML5 and the sites which require flash are fast vanishing.

I don't necessarily disagree but I think that you must know as well as I do that there are a million and one piddly little websites and resources built around flash that the teachers can't possibly teach without and if you even think about taking flash off , you'll get lynched. Same with java

I can tell you if flash and java go down across the school it knocks *loads* of things off. It would be nice not to have to run it but back to the real world!
