MX records and Exchange

Hi all,

 

Couldn't find anything under Exchange or 1and1 - sorry if this is a repeat post.

 

One of my small primary schools uses 1and1 internet (there are only about thirty kids as its in the middle of nowhere so it does what they need).

 

I have taken over a pretty powerful bit of kit that I am going to use to set up some Hyper V machines rather than just have the one server they currently have. One of the machines I am going to set up is an exchange server but I dont know how to set up the MX records to point from 1and1 to the exchange server.

 

Is this difficult to do? Could someone tell me how to do this or give me a general idea of what you need to do to get email to your exchange server?

Your probably better off looking at either Google apps for education or office 365 for email, no need to have locally hosted email for that few pupils (and likely a small number of staff too).

 

If you want to continue with local exchange then you'll need to set up the Mx records on the domain name itself to point at your static IP, various firewall configs to allow in mail traffic and probably some other stuff too.

In 1 and 1 go to Manage Domains and then click on your domain name and edit dns and pop in the ip you want to use for your mx record in the box (you will probably have to select "other mail server" from the buttons. Publish that ip with your firewall (if you're using exchange 2013 then you only need to allow https traffic)

On exchange you'll need to configure certificates, your accepted domains and send and receive connectors to send and receive email (and some other bits) but you may want to read through a guide like this one Exchange Server 2013 Preview - Part 2: Basic configuration, Configure Mail Flow and Certificates - Exchange - www.windows-noob.com
