DevilsAdvocate Posted March 17, 2015 Posted March 17, 2015 Hi all, We have O365 setup but aren't using it for Exchange (we are still onsite) so the Exchange license isn't even assigned to anyone. However the 'Mail Protection' section is showing 95 Messages received and 57 processed by filtering. Upon closer inspection the top recipients are myself, my technician and our generic IT support address. Could anyone explain why this is the case?
DevilsAdvocate Posted March 17, 2015 Author Posted March 17, 2015 We are indeed. I'm just a little perplexed as to where these stats are coming from?
Michael Posted March 17, 2015 Posted March 17, 2015 If you have addresses setup such as: enquiry@ admin@ catchall@ support@ I'm not surprised e-mail is hitting these kind of accounts.
Michael Posted March 17, 2015 Posted March 17, 2015 So just to clarify, where are your MX records currently pointing to?
DevilsAdvocate Posted March 17, 2015 Author Posted March 17, 2015 They are pointing to the external IP addresses of our Edge Transport servers.
Michael Posted March 17, 2015 Posted March 17, 2015 OK - so if you can see the top 3 accounts, are they hitting @onmicrosoft.com type addresses or your actual school domain? Presumably if you've got either of these then an Exchange license would be assigned, if the stats say e-mail was filtered etc...
DevilsAdvocate Posted March 17, 2015 Author Posted March 17, 2015 It's the actual school domain. The license i have assigned to my account are Office 365 ProPlus for Faculty: - OneDrive for Business (Plan 1) - Office 365 ProPlus Office 365 Education E1 For Faculty: - Yammer for Academic (On by default) - Office Online for Education - Sharepoint Plan 1 for EDU Both Exchange Online (Plan 1) and Lync Online (Plan 2) are not checked. O365 even reports on my user that I have no Exchange Mailbox.
Michael Posted March 17, 2015 Posted March 17, 2015 In that case pass - it makes no sense I agree! So if you add an Exchange license, are all the e-mails sitting there in Junk out of curiosity? It's the actual school domain. DevilsAdvocate Posted March 17, 2015 Author Posted March 17, 2015 Just tried to assign it to myself and I get a warning that my on-premises mailbox hasn't been migrated to Exchange Online. The Exchange Online mailbox will be available after migration is completed. Hmmmm!
Michael Posted March 17, 2015 Posted March 17, 2015 It's probably referring to your MX records not pointing to Exchange Online - maybe one to ask Microsoft I think.
snagrat Posted March 17, 2015 Posted March 17, 2015 Just tried to assign it to myself and I get a warning that my on-premises mailbox hasn't been migrated to Exchange Online. The Exchange Online mailbox will be available after migration is completed. Hmmmm! You get this because it knows the mailbox is still on-premise. Once the mailbox is migrated then a license will be assigned. Nothing strange here
DevilsAdvocate Posted March 17, 2015 Author Posted March 17, 2015 That's fine and all, we have no plans to migrate at this time. But still doesn't explain where the stats are coming from on O365 regarding mail protection since we aren't using it at all for mail.
