Steve21 Posted March 13, 2015 Posted March 13, 2015 Evening guys, Been looking at alternatives to replace the old ISA box that's sitting at my new job and got a quote from a reseller for Smoothwall and was wondering what the items on the quote physically mean as such: 1x S8 Appliance 1x UTM Software License 600x Web Filter License 1x Enhanced Service Agreement S8 Appliance - Assuming the actual hardware box etc (Is there different levels of box in relation to user count? Approx 1000 users, but only 500 machines) UTM Software License - Assuming this is the main software license and includes firewalls etc? Web Filter License - Obviously web filter Enhanced Service Agreement - What's the different levels of service that are offered? Just wondering about whether all of this is actually needed in relation to replacing ISA, and whether we can start off without some parts (e.g. Web Filter) and just use the Smoothwall as ISA replacement firewall until we have the spare budget to add additional filtering etc as not sure we can fit £14k into this years budget :s Thanks, Steve
mjs_mjs Posted March 13, 2015 Posted March 13, 2015 Have you thought about open source alternatives such as PFsense with squidguard? 1
Chris_ Posted March 14, 2015 Posted March 14, 2015 (edited) I'd query the 600x web filter licenses, you've got 500 machines, but 1000 users, do you need to license the 1000 or the 500? This is something Smoothwall failed to give a decent answer to when I asked them. Could you license less to save money? Edited March 14, 2015 by Chris_ 1
Boredguy Posted March 14, 2015 Posted March 14, 2015 When I spoke to a Smoothwall agent the other week I was asked the number of users we had not the number of stations, and that was the number of Filter Licences that appeared on the quote. Not sure why there was the same number of Enhanced Service Agreements as Filter licences, but as we're only getting rough ideas on costs to move ISP's in a years time I've not worried too much about it. Come August I'll start to look more carefully at options. 1
Steve21 Posted March 14, 2015 Author Posted March 14, 2015 Have you thought about open source alternatives such as PFsense with squidguard? Aye been looking at that recently, but was thinking long term wise expanding to a proper BYOD (which we don't offer currently) having the option to just add the filtering license onto the firewall would make life easier rather than reworking the wheel twice etc But not at 14k haha I'd query the 600x web filter licenses, you've got 500 machines, but 1000 users, do you need to license the 1000 or the 500? This is something Smoothwall failed to give a decent answer to when I asked them. Could you license less to save money? Pretty sure Smooth is on computers (Lightspeed on users) think the other 100 were for BYOD devices etc as it's fairly limited currently to who we allow to bring them in. Our quote only showed 1 service agreement, but aye was looking at rough prices just was hoping to see if I could at least get the firewall part sorted this year (ISA 2004 "bit" old now ) Steve
zag Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 Smoothwall prices have doubled in the last few years. It should be per device, not per user as far as I know. I'm still trying to work out what our "Enhanced Service Agreement" means, I've only had to ring support maybe 5 times in 3 years so that works out at nearly £500 a call! 1
fiza Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 It should be per device, not per user as far as I know.( I have been quoted per user.
Steve21 Posted March 16, 2015 Author Posted March 16, 2015 It's a good start that haha I've been told per user, but seems everyone getting different. Hopefully one of the Smoothie guys might appear in a puff of smoke to clarify! Steve
tom_newton Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 We're moving to per-user - BYOD has meant per-device is not only hard to count, but expensive for our users. Support is something we're continually trying to price more fairly - it's a tricky one as not all customers use it to the same extent. 2

Thank you for clarification, guess that means need a new quote anyway In terms of the filtering licenses/support etc would you happen to know that part? (First post) Thanks, Steve
