Users' Home folders have the wrong name (Server 2003)

I have several users whose home folders do not have their name displayed correctly & this has been like this for some time (before I even started working here).

 

eg user JSmith's home folder on the server is called BillyJones and has a slightly different folder icon. Several other user folders on that drive are also called BillyJones but they are able to access their files and folders when they log on and have their H drive mapped correctly. The folder permissions are set correctly as far as I can see. If I rename 1 of the BillyJones folders to JSmith then all the BillyJones folders change to that name too.

 

If I copy one of these folders to the server desktop the folder name appears correctly after copying. When I copy it back it becomes BillyJones again.

 

I have created a new folder called JSmith, copied all JSmith's docs to it, removed their BillyJones folder and then copied the new folder back to the server where it renames itself to BillyJones. BillyJones is an existing staff member and we have deleted his account and recreated it and his home folders as part of the process to try and fix this issue but that didn't make any difference.

 

This is frustrating and I'd be grateful for any pointers as to how I can get these folders to display the correct username.

look for a hidden file called desktop.ini and delete it

 

also try looking at the folder names in command prompt id lay odds they are correct there

Wow, that was easy. I wouldn't have thought the desktop ini was the problem

you can use file server resource manager to stop it creating them though im never sure if thats a good idea or not

During Easter Break / summer break i assume you're upgrading to 2008r2 / 2012r2 as 2003 is going end of life in july 2015.
