ForgotMyPassword Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 Are you using Windows Authentication for the account? Or the SSMConnector account as per the instructions - I accidentally skipped that bit and it caused problems for me.
mdrabble Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 I had this, turned out I had s space at the end of the licence code. Found the server side of things a hell of a lot easier that the iPad installs! Major pain in the arse!!
Wubbalubbadub Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 Not a fan at all of this SIMS teacher app - Only supports teachers. Cant supply logins for cover staff without screwing over your current SIMS data by making everyone a teacher! - manually activate each device - Office 365 integration doesn't seem to work! Lastly random erros when trying to open it... So yeah....

Lastly random erros when trying to open it... So yeah.... Following from this.... Our Office 365 integration now works and no more error messages. Capita sorted.! App has great potential! However with lack of support for anyone other than teachers, makes it annoying. Cover Supervisors are going to think im singling them out! They probably user it more than the teachers.
vikpaw Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 Moving this to the MIS forum as it's more relevant. @MJTayloronline - any idea what the issue was?
splattthecat Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 Are you using Windows Authentication for the account? Or the SSMConnector account as per the instructions - I accidentally skipped that bit and it caused problems for me. I had similar issues installing at a school. It wouldn't work until the SSMConnector account was used, but the instructions skipped adding this if the school was already set up in SSM, which it had been as part of the install and was set to use Windows Authentication
Wubbalubbadub Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 Moving this to the MIS forum as it's more relevant. @MJTayloronline - any idea what the issue was? Yeah it was the SCCM Connector. I too was using windows authentication. 1
PhilNeal Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 We've submitted the next version of the Teacher App to Apple which offers non-teacher access. Permissions in SIMS are strictly enforced. 3
splattthecat Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 Thanks Phil That is good news, as we have several schools waiting eagerly for this to be available.
CyberNerd Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 Any news on the Android version? And will it Port to Chrome ?
PhilNeal Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 Android & W8 currently support registration, rewards & sanctions. Next submission to stores is end of August and that will include mark sheets. We haven't ported to Chrome. 1
CyberNerd Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 Android & W8 currently support registration, rewards & sanctions. Next submission to stores is end of August and that will include mark sheets. We haven't ported to Chrome. If it is well written, the port to chrome will take 2 min: https://developer.chrome.com/apps/getstarted_arc Useful for us as all staff have chromebooks, and it works on other platforms so means the SIMS client doesn't need to be installed.
CyberNerd Posted July 26, 2015 Posted July 26, 2015 @PhilNeal With regards to a Chrome port; I wonder if you would explain the logic behind not looking at it ? Capita develop the app for W8 phone which has a tiny marketshare and you develop for IOS which is being outsold in the (US) education market by chromebooks. Chrome has had the largest browser marketshare for quite some time. Apps can be installed from the management console and apps that work on the desktop version also work on the chromebook/tablet version. The port from android is pretty straightforward and it opens up a huge market: SIMS teacher app on OSX,Linux,Windows,Chromebooks. It seems to me completely illogical not to do this. why?
PhilNeal Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 @CyberNerd we have specially targeted tablet devices rather than PCs. W8 tablets are very cheap and in our view could take off - why pay >£300 for an iPad when a W8 tablet is <£100? and can be managed using standard tools. The fact that a W8 tablet app runs on a W8 PC is a happy co-incidence although the App looks good in that environment. Whilst Chromebooks have taken off in the US, the last time I saw UK figures they weren't that great. We haven't seen demand from our schools for a Chrome version. In my experience a port will reveal differences that will need to be addressed. If demand occurs we will of course consider the environment.

W8 tablets are very cheap and in our view could take off - why pay >£300 for an iPad when a W8 tablet is <£100? and can be managed using standard tools. Any chance you could mention that to your dev team before their next feature launch? I already have W8 and android devices in my school. I was informed just before the end of term that it's now essential to buy iPads just to run the assessment function of teacher app.
PhilNeal Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 @jmak - what is true is that iPads at present are the first platform we release for. W8 & Android are developed next; Assessment is due on these platforms in September. 1
jmak Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 (edited) @PhilNeal - just asking (slightly tongue in cheek, admittedly) if you might think about reversing the order? You asked why pay >£300 for an iPad when a W8 tablet would do the job for less money and with better integration to school networks - the sole reason I've been given at our school is "to run SIMS teacher app". Edit: I know the release is due before the beginning of term, but I've already lost the argument, because it was available on iPads first. Edited July 27, 2015 by jmak
PhilNeal Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 @jmak - I'm afraid its a question of targeting resources where they are most likely to find traction. There seem to be a lot of schools that have bought iPads and are now in search of applications! I actually prefer the W8 designs! Who knows maybe one day the leading tablet platform may well not be Apple! 1

The Windows 8 version of the App does not run on Windows Phone. At the moment, the Phone and PC versions of Windows use different App Stores and operate differently. Of course, this is different on Win 10 - where they are of course now unified with Universal Apps. I suspect then (scaling issues aside) that the App might then work on Windows Mobile 10 as well as Windows 10.
CyberNerd Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 I think Capita are missing the point: if they developed for HTML, and not the device they will open up to more devices and half the development time, which seems to be the issue at the moment. ie if it can be put on Chrome and run wherever chrome runs and deployed centrally. Just for the record, a Chromebook IS a less than £300 tablet nowdays. anyway - does anyone have the APK for android and let me know if it ports via Arc Welder ?
PhilNeal Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 @CyberNerd - there is something about an app's responsiveness that people prefer as is evidenced by the popularity of the stores.
CAM Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 There are enough "apps" on the Windows Phone store already that are just website wrappers. They are terrible, lazy and an instant uninstall from my device. A proper app beats a wrapper any day as you only transfer the data, not the layout and logic behind the app. Perfect for low speed connections. Windows Phone also needs live tiles to be taken into consideration (in the case of the SIMS app, a reminder for a register, notifications or something). This is an important part of the Windows Phone ecosystem and failure to utilize it is pure laziness on the developers' part, again a common problem in the Windows App Store as app makers sorely underutilize the platform's potential. 1
CyberNerd Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 @CyberNerd - there is something about an app's responsiveness that people prefer as is evidenced by the popularity of the stores. Indeed, so write for android and then put it here with all the other apps so I can install into our browsers. https://chrome.google.com/webstore/category/apps
CyberNerd Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 @CyberNerd - we have released an Android version yes great. can you run the APK through arc-welder please and release it on the Chrome store.
