Edu-IT Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 From what I understand, activating an FTTC connection means moving the copper wires in the PCP from one area to another in simple terms. Is that right? I currently have a fully working phone line and ADSL connection but been told that due to a 'copper mismatch' they can't activate FTTC for a few weeks until some additional work is done to repair this. I've no idea what a copper mismatch is, or, why a fully working connection would have such mismatch? Part of me thinks I'm being took for a ride.
plexer Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 Probably but if you google fttc copper mismatch there's a very interesting pdf document which should be number 2, this link being the number 1 result. Ben
Edu-IT Posted March 10, 2015 Author Posted March 10, 2015 I had a look through that but still none the wiser on what a copper mismatch is.
m25man Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 CCA has been used in many areas as a result of the copper shortages of the 70s Unfortunately electrically it's about as efficient as wet string at certain frequencies especially those used at DSL/VDSL speeds Problem is no one actually knows where it's been used and getting it changed is a never ending battle.

Edu-IT Posted March 10, 2015 Author Posted March 10, 2015 I'm really confused now about how CCA would affect FTTC? The 'development' is about 11 years old so I'd expect the cabling to the PCP is what it needs to be.
plexer Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 I had a look through that but still none the wiser on what a copper mismatch is. No I didn't see anything in there either I just thought it was a cool document Ben
Edu-IT Posted March 12, 2015 Author Posted March 12, 2015 Okay so it turns out it's a copper routing mismatch issue.... like that makes more sense!
JRowley Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 Sounds similar to what broke my connection in that basically there are a set of boards one for traditional broadband the other for FTTC, they probably got confused being from BT and like with mine, couldn't find a spare connection on the FTTC board (or in my case disconnected me so they could use my connection for someone else, and left me disconnected without telling anyone, thanks BT.), so they will have to install an additional board to have the capacity for yourself.
Edu-IT Posted March 12, 2015 Author Posted March 12, 2015 It's a brand new cabinet, just gone live, and I'd hazard a guess that I am one of the first to order as I was checking frequently. So I don't think it's capacity.
mats Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 FTTC is great if you have a good connection from your street cabinet. If you like too far away (and "too far" is a variable variable used by telcos) or your copper connection to the cab is otherwise poor, you'll get mediocre speeds and no chance of anybody sorting it out. That's just my experience.
Edu-IT Posted March 12, 2015 Author Posted March 12, 2015 Not too far from the PCP so shouldn't be an issue there. Am due an update from BT soon so I guess I'll just have to wait and see when they fix this mysterious issue.
sted Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 It's a brand new cabinet, just gone live, and I'd hazard a guess that I am one of the first to order as I was checking frequently. So I don't think it's capacity. don't bank on it. the cab im on went live and within 24 hours was full and then the next card filled up about as quickly. Funny how what according to bt wasn't a commercially viable cab to upgrade has now had to have a 2nd fttc cab built next to it
Edu-IT Posted March 12, 2015 Author Posted March 12, 2015 Oh I've no idea. I'm at the mercy of OR. *bangs head*
JRowley Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 Oh I've no idea. I'm at the mercy of OR. *bangs head* To be perfectly honest the most you can do is keep ringing up for updates, took me 6 weeks to get my issue resolved thanks to BT incompetence, don't let that be the case for you.

The 'development' is about 11 years old so I'd expect the cabling to the PCP is what it needs to be. In which case you should be ok, Unfortunately many building contractors wouldn't know the difference. Yes you get Fibre to "A" cabinet but what's between you and the cabinet? I still see CCA being used "stapled" to woodwork! BT Openreach guys have no idea what runs between half of our boxes many of our DSL lines are reused from 70s ISDN circuits[emoji31]
Edu-IT Posted March 12, 2015 Author Posted March 12, 2015 No idea what sits between me and the cab. ADSL speed isn't bad at around 6/7 Meg and it's generally stable so I can only assume it's of a suitable standard.
