Sibrows Posted February 23, 2015 Posted February 23, 2015 How do others approach the issue of software that relies on the end user having admin rights on the machine? If I can avoid it I'd prefer not to give all staff local admin rights or to disable UAC. With Windows 7 pre-SP1 (I think) I could fudge it by adjusting the security permissions on the folder(s) but that 'loop hole' appears to have been 'fixed'. Have I missed something or am I going to have to resign myself to disabling UAC? The primary contenders for me are SIMS and PARS but others are cropping up with irritating regularity.
localzuk Posted February 23, 2015 Posted February 23, 2015 SIMS doesn't require any UAC rights - deployment and update are handled by SOLUS 3 so it just runs as a normal application. With PARS - have you contacted them? They might have a way of dealing with it. We've been running Win 7 for a year and a half now and we've had only 2 programs which were admin rights obsessed, and we returned them for refunds!
Sibrows Posted February 23, 2015 Author Posted February 23, 2015 We're yet to move to SOLUS 3 (booked to happen over Easter). I'll give PARS a call and see what they recommend...
Arthur Posted February 23, 2015 Posted February 23, 2015 How do others approach the issue of software that relies on the end user having admin rights on the machine? Like @localzuk, we usually send it back to the vendor for a refund. If they haven't updated their software to work without admin rights since Vista was released eight years ago it's probably not worth installing anyway. Our tech department has a 3D program that used to require admin rights. However, I used the 'Compatibility Administrator' included with Microsoft's Application Compatibility Toolkit to create a shim that forces the program to run as a standard user (RunAsInvoker). SIMS is updated via SOLUS3.
sted Posted February 23, 2015 Posted February 23, 2015 i was told i needed to turn off uac for solus 3 to work
Arthur Posted February 23, 2015 Posted February 23, 2015 i was told i needed to turn off uac for solus 3 to work All of our Windows PCs have UAC enabled (even those with SIMS and SOLUS3). Disabling UAC isn't a good idea.

FN-GM Posted February 23, 2015 Posted February 23, 2015 All of our Windows PCs have UAC enabled (even those with SIMS and SOLUS3). Disabling UAC isn't a good idea. Same here, we have Solus 3 and UAC enabled. Thats in both our Primary and Secondary school.
3s-gtech Posted February 23, 2015 Posted February 23, 2015 UAC enabled everywhere for us too. Never found an issue with it with SOLUS3.
free780 Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 You can disable just part of UAC if needed. Such as the folder redirection. Use security filtering to target certain PCs. As for solus it is probably due to which account it runs as.
localzuk Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 i was told i needed to turn off uac for solus 3 to work Whoever told you that needs to update their knowledge. You definitely don't need to turn UAC off.
sted Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 Whoever told you that needs to update their knowledge. You definitely don't need to turn UAC off. considering how much of a faf it was id agree it would of been quicker for me to manually install it on pcs that needed it but they wouldnt let me
apeman Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 I used the 'Compatibility Administrator' included with Microsoft's Application Compatibility Toolkit to create a shim that forces the program to run as a standard user (RunAsInvoker). . If you can't return the software and are forced to run it then this is the method you should use
