[voip] Single phone extension

Hoping this is a simple one but...

 

We are moving office down to the basement and we need a phone line down there. It is incredibly difficult to get a line down there because of the position of the incoming telephone lines. We do however have a fibre optic line going down there for data from our main server rooms. So basically, would it be possible to put some sort of FXO/FXS gateway on the existing incoming telephone line that then turns it in to a VoiP line internally?

 

I'm not sure if I've explained that very well... but basically can I have 1 internal Voip line that goes to a physical telephone cable, without spending a fortune?

Yes, but it might not work reliably if you do it on the cheap. It can also be tricky to configure - one of those projects you regret starting. We did this with 3cx, a grandstream phone, and a grandstream gateway.

 

Have you got any Cat5 network cabling going there? you can run phones over cat5.

 

Another option would be to get a sip trunk via your internet connection. You can have your external number ported to this. This might not work if you have a PBX on the line, but you can avoid the hassle of an analog gateway.

I've mostly done this the other way to turn franking machines and faxes into extensions of a voip system, but I can't see why you'd have too much trouble in reverse, with this being an effective extension on your existing PBX. It does look like such a device might be slightly harder to come by than the other way round though.

What about building an asterisk system? Might sound overkill but could pave the way to upgrade your whole phone system.

Thanks for the advice, we have ordered a Grandstream gateway and phone now and I've setup 3CX on a VM which seems to be doing the job really well.

Nice idea, but the range isn't long enough. We are moving down in to the depths of the basement, quite a way from our current office.

I did think this, but I'm trying to get them to buy a whole phone system anyway. Think I will start with the 3cx and go from there.
