So was parking the car this morning and managed to scratch one of the teachers cars going in the bay... Told the teacher who has been very nice about it. He knows someone who does body repairs and he will get a price from him rather that go via the insurance. Never had an accident before so dont know what to do. Go via the insurance and lose NCD etc. or just deal with it ourselves? I just don't want any comebacks!

Any advice?

If it was just a scratch I think you are fine. Dent or more then insurance probably has to know. Sorting a scratch shouldn't be too costly, unless you scratched it right down the side, on many body panels.

Wait until you know how much you are in for...

I don't believe as you are on private property, rather than the highway, you need to inform your insurers.

I don't think you need to inform your insurers anyway? I got in an accident about a year ago when someone hit me up the back while in standstill traffic and we got moved by the police who saw us and they said it's our choice to go to the insurers or to deal with it privately...

First of all well done for telling the teacher in question that you hit their car, I have had too many examples of people hitting my car either with their door or colliding with my car and not telling me. The one was even a member of staff here hit my door pretty hard to leave scratches and decided not to tell me about it.

See how much the repair will cost you first because sometimes even if it's minor damage the body shop company will say the whole panel needs re-spraying which then it will cost you 100's. If they come to you with an offer that's very expensive let the other party know you can't afford it and that you'll have to do it through your insurance.

Has it left any damage on your car?

Edit: You're not legally obliged in anyway to go through your insurance as long as both parties are happy with the outcome that should be the end of it.

If you can deal with it between yourselves and use a reputable place to repair the damage(s) then they should get one year warranty on the repairs so they can go back to the place where the car was repaired if they have any issue(s)

As long as you and said teacher are ok to sort it out this way then I don't see any problems. Like you say if you do go through insurance then you lose NCB etc

Also like @abillybob said ref seeing how much it will cost so maybe get a few quotes if that is ok with the Teacher, unless the place they know is ok price wise and quality of work done etc.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Can't see any dents on the car just a pretty deepish scratch about 30cm that goes across the 2 doors. The plastic trim thingy on the front door fell off too. Its left a couple of scrapes on my bumper but i can sort at a later date.

My excess is about £500 i think so anything cheaper than that i will leave the insurance out of it.

Doesn't an accident of any sort, regardless of where or the circumstances become a 'material fact' in respect of an insurance policy? Regardless of whether it results in a claim or not?

Remember on an insurance proposal, they ask about accidents in the last x years, not claims.

Had a small accident at work a year or two ago with a work colleague and didn't go through the insurance company however I did get all the details from the other person ie contact details, there car reg plate number, make and model of there car and also photos of damage done to both cars

Then advised my insurance company that the accident had occurred and that we were dealing with it and weren't going through insurance but was just a quick courtesy call to let them know that it had happened so they had a note of it on there system.

Got it all sorted out and it hasn't effected my NCB etc

I would say find a reputable, local company that can sort it for you (with recommendations from people, etc. you can trust) then make sure they know full well it isn't an insurance job!

Just been and took so pics. There is a small dent but other than that it doesn't look to bad?

T-Cut will remove that. A simple Dent Removal kit like the one I got from halfrauds would easily pull out that dent for you as well.

Seems very minor to me just get a quote from the body shop yourself if your not confident in t-cutting it, then pay it off between yourselves car insurances are a PAINNN hate them!

word of warning, ensure that the other person has had no contact with their insurers, i got stung with that, kept my no claims, but i still have it on my record.
