Storage question

I have a media room with 16 macs all using an older HP SAN I have as storage space (Final Cut X) but its getting on now and it's extended warranty is costing about £1500 a year. Its been pointed out to me that for that I can get a new Synology / QNAP NAS with a 3 year warranty however can someone tell me a way of knowing if the throughput will be acceptable for purpose.

 

Looking at something like this as an example...

The iMacs all read to this space when using Final Cut and can not afford any lag.

I've got a QNAP 8 drive 859 pro and with both network cards teamed together getting at about 150-180MB/s throughput on backups I'm doing and with drives being in RAID 10 (half the amount of storage )you should have enough IOPS to handle 16 clients connecting and writing at same time .

What spec is the old HP SAN and how much throughput & iops is it reporting?

Its an HP 4300 which is total overkill but surplus to requirements now hence why its just running media. Just looking at its iops is about 5-40 so doubt a NAS will have any issue running this unless someone here can tell me otherwise.

 

(I know there is little chance of the P4300 failing other than a hard drive but if it has student work on it, I want a warranty).

I can't back it up with data, but I just have a feeling that Final Cut Pro (as would Logic or ProTools) would absolutely hammer a NAS into submission when dealing with this workload. We looked at it a few years ago and there was no question - even for fairly small workloads, nothing but a serious SAN would manage the workload. My advice would be to buy a replacement and try it, rather than swap out. That warranty cost is high, but it was a seriously expensive piece of kit new, and may still be justified.

 

Me being me, I'd let the warranty lapse and just try to fix it if/when it breaks.
