Upgrading to Yosemite

Hi All,

 

We have a suite of 20 iMacs & a MacMini running server, all the Macs are on 10.8 & are set up with a magic triangle, the users authenticate with their AD UN/PW & home drives etc are mapped with WGM which also controls permissions etc. I have been asked to investigate updating to Yosemite & am posting to see if anyone has done this & if so is there anything to look out for. I remember briefly looking into this when mavericks first came out and was advised not to due to problems with ACL's. Is this still the case?

 

Any recommendations?

Samba is still a mess thanks to Apple. If what you have works, leave it well and truly alone.

We have moved a few machines to Yosemite from Mountain Lion - skipped Mavericks. Some issues - most of which were solved by booting into Safe Mode (hold Shift) then restarting. Fresh installs also had some issues with freezing on the loading screen. Same fix.

 

Generally they work okay though, I'd recommend you check compatibility of all software. Apple stuff is generally excellent (Logic Pro 9 has had an update to work) where Avid stuff is terrible (so we're ditching all Avid's own Mbox models and Pro Tools).

Thanks, Are you using these with the magic triangle set up? We mainly use Sibelius which is Avid so will have to check that out, however they mainly want to update due to the new garageband.

Yes, we have them set up that way. Avid's attitude is usually "if you want the latest OS support, you need to buy the latest version of Sibelius". They don't offer much support for older versions. Out of principle, I make sure that no part of my budget goes their way - having used iLok dongles with Pro Tools 9 and 10, I think that's fair.

 

The latest Garageband will work on Mavericks, not that it helps much but at least Avid have some support for 10.9.

The "crashing 50% through boot up" is still an open issue with Yosemite so if it is possible to hold off a little longer, I would. Or have a roll back option if you deploy and start getting this issue.

 

The problem is boot cache related. Sometimes booting into safe mode / verbose mode or single user mode fixes it temporarily but the issue does come back. There is a possible fix, adding the following to /etc/rc.server:

 

/usr/sbin/BootCacheControl jettison

 

On the server side, you will be looking to switch to to Profile manager as Workgroup manager isn't supported any more. That has a lot of issues in itself. We host Casper servers for our clients as we were seeing so many bugs with Profile Manager.

Hmmm, we have Workgroup Manager still working on our Mac server (running Yosemite). Possibly some withcraft involved. Seems alright though.

 

Agreed that the 50% bootup issue is best avoided if possible. Apple may fix it in 10.10.967.

Have keychain issue been resolved in yosemite?

Not seen them, but wouldn't presume they're fixed.
