Displayport 1.2 Converted to HDMI, 4k @60Hz?

Hey Guys

So my machine at home is running a MSI GTX 770 2GB GPU which doesn't support HDMI 2.0 only has a 1.4 version allowing me to display 4k but at 30Hz. The DisplayPort on it however is version 1.2 will support 4k at 60Hz so my question is if I use a cable like the one in the link will this enable me to display 4k on my computer at 60Hz?

Thanks :)

It actually says in the description "maximum resolution of 1920 x 1200" - so no 4K.

Also, you need to check whether your GPU outputs audio over DP, not all do.

One of these.

Thank you but I already have a 4K TV. Is there no way you can get a Display Port 1.2 to a HDMI 2.0 converter or something like that to get it to work! I'm having major problems with all of this, it's getting me so stressed out.

My TV is this one to be exact

Sony Bravia KD49X8505BBU

Here are the specs listed:

and this is the email I've got from Sony Support:

Dear Mr abillybob

Thank you for contacting Sony regarding your KD-49X8505B, we are sorry to learn that the HDMI ports version are not 2.0.

In regards to your enquiry, please note that all our 4K TVs including this model support HDMI version 2.0 indeed on the 4 HDMI ports, please clarify the reason that you do not feel that they are version 2.0 for further assistance.

Should you have any further questions, please feel free to reply to this email.

Thank you for your enquiry.

Yours Sincerely,

Mostafa

Problem being PC World is saying my TV only had 1 x HDMI 2.0 and the rest are just standard HDMI 1.4 Ports. Sony's website is saying that I have 4 HDMI ports at different p's (whatever that means) such as 24p, 30p etc....

and yet Sony support are saying they're all HDMI 2.0 ports. So who the hell do I believe!?

I'm really hoping one of you guys can clear this all up for me as I can still send the TV back and just want to make sure all ports on my TV are HDMI 2.0 otherwise it's going back!

There's nothing you can do, but I wouldn't sweat it; your GPU won't handle 4K @ 60FPS anyway!

EDIT: meant to say for games. It might work fine for movies, but 30Hz should be fine for that. Displayport is an annoying "standard" seemingly invented to enable the sale of ridiculously expensive monitors.

It handles games like 7DTD or GTA 4 on 4k at 30FPS just fine and would run higher FPS but it can't it's stuck at 30FPS all the time. It also runs the Talos Principle very well at 4k giving me 30FPS for that continuously.

So is my TV ok or does that need to go back do you know?

You did seem to be suggesting that your displayport was pointless.

So how do I make use of my DisplayPort 1.2 on my GPU that can output at 4k @60Hz?

I was showing you that it wasn't.

I think you're paying the price for jumping on new tech too soon. There are DP to 4k HDMI adapters, but all those I saw that stated refresh were 30Hz - I suspect the rest are the same. Maybe in a few months time that will change (though I suspect it may not be possible). Otherwise, you could get a new GPU that does output via HDMI 2.0 etc. How much would you want for the MSI? ;)

It doesn't look possible with your card/TV - the card would need HDMI 2.0, or the TV would need Displayport. Converters seem to only allow 4K at 30Hz at present. This situation looks like it'll change in the next few months. Edited by 3s-gtech

How much are you willing to spend!? ;)

Damn! Thanks everyone. So my TV is ok then and supports HDMI 2.0 so nothing to worry about there?

It will only be "stuck" at 30FPS if you have VSync on or that's as much as it can handle. Disable VSync and see what kind of framerate you get.

If Sony have told you that the TV has HDMI 2, I'd be inclined to believe them. Their website does say that this range is HDMI 2 compatible, though they don't actually list 3840x2160/60p as a supported resolution - you might want to email them back and clarify that:4K Ultra HD TV | X8500B 4K LED TV with TRILUMINOS Display | Sony UK

The problem is your GPU; it only supports HDMI 1.4. So far as I can tell, there is not a HDMI -> DP adapter that supports 4K @ 60Hz.

Without some source of 3840x2160/60p content, I can't see any way you can test that the TV is actually capable of what is stated.

TL;DR - ask Sony.
