Hopefully over half term I can start building up a servers in 12 r2.

I want to start upgrading our old 2008r2 DCs (ad, dhcp, dns) to 12 r2.

Is there an idiots guide or rookie advice people you can give.

I had no problems doing in-place upgrades on our two domain controllers (+DNS, DHCP, file server, UniFi controller) from 2008R2.

Obviously you can't do this on Exchange/SCCM/SQL boxes, which needs a swing migration... and is a mega pain in the ass for us SCCM users, so I've been putting it off for the past year.

I'd agree with itguywestmidlands build new Servers and promote them and move all the roles before demoting the old DC's and remove them cleanly.

In place upgrading Exchange servers is basically a non-no from the documentation I've read. Essentially, once it's built, that's it - you can migrate to another server but the pain you can inflict on yourself if you mess with your main box is considerable. Mine's stuck on 2012 R1 as a result - the only 2012 R1 server I have.
