Hello - how do you guys prepare an image of Mavericks or Yosemite. Do you run any sort of sysprep like with windows?

I have a deploy studio server ready - just wanted to get some info on how to prepare the image.

I just use DiskMaker X which makes the whole process quick and easy, but there are probably better solutions if you have hundreds to upgrade.

All I will say is the Yosemite 10.10.2 update is due out very soon and will hopefully fix a lot of wireless related issues.

I like DiskMakerX but unless I'm missing a huge bit of its functionality, isn't its only function to make an OS X installer disk from the installer you get from the App Store? It's not something you build an image with.

I just upload the image to DeployStudio. No need to bother using a SysPrep equivalent. If you DualBoot NTFS images for Windows can also be captured using DeployStudio although makes sure you SysPrep it first the same with any Windows deployment.

Depending on whether or not your Macs are in a networked environment (have a Mac Server on the network) you can push out the preferences etc... using profile manager or go old school and use WorkGroup manager which can be downloaded for free and does work for Yosemite. If you're just using Local accounts then be sure to set them up before you capture the image.

Edit: Also forgot to mention software packages can be added after you have captured the standard image onto DeployStudio.

To create a base image we nearly always use autodmg now. If we need to "install" OS X instead, I've used createosxinstallpkg a few times which works really well. It creates a PKG installer of the install app that can be dropped into a deploy studio workflow.

Although there is no sysprep for OS X, its not advised to create images from booted systems these days as it has a habit of causing odd issues.

There is no Sysprep process but if you are using Deploystudio it does clean up a number of things like byhost preferences and local KDC for you.

Remember Deploystudio is reverse engineering Apples OS so this is why it takes time for them to support the new releases.

The current recommend way to deploy OS X is use an unbooted image using something like netinstall / AutoDMG or even use the OS thats on the Mac out of the box and use a software deployment tool to add the necessary software.

Thanks for your replies guys. The main reason I asked was due to the keychain and all the problems i've had with it. I thought I might have been missing a step where a sysprep equivalent might have cleaned it up.

Do you guys get any problems with the keychain? My machines are bound to OD and AD. When users log in and use GarageBand they sometimes get Keychain messages which when they enter their password doesn't go away. It is so random that it is giving me huge headaches (not to mention the teacher).

I've heard that students get a message to 'update' or 'create' a new keychain on login but i've never seen that. Am I missing a config step? I'm using workgroup manager to roll out settings as I haven't got my head around profile manager yet.

I've just sat through a class using Yosemite and have had no keychain messages so far.

Fingers crossed.

It'll be fine until the user changes their password or has their password reset. They will need to update their keychain password at that point or delete the keychain so a new one can be generated.

I changed a student password and they were given the option to create a new keychain upon login. I will just need to inform staff of this to prevent support calls every time they use it.

We get the keychain message whenever a user changes their password on the windows network. I'm pretty sure that if they enter their old password in to the keychain message, the keychain is updated and the user can continue working.
