MRO's data confirms that Beagle landed just 5km from the centre of its targeted touchdown zone

 

This was an ellipse, 500km by 100km, on a flat, near-equatorial plain known as Isidis. To be off-centre by such a small margin amounts to a bulls-eye.

 

Such a shame Professor Pillinger isn't about to see how close he came :(

Wonder what went wrong with it?

 

Looking at the released photos of the landing site it appears not all of the solar panel unfurled. Its transmitter aerial was below the panels so without a full deployment it was unable to communicate with its mothership.
