Veeam + Tape backup or Symantec

Hi guys,

 

At present I have the standard version of veeam that we use to backup our cluster nightly to a SAN in another building. In the past we'd also been using an old version of backup exec (2010) to backup files to an LTO4 drive for long term storage. (The SAN only holds 14 days max)

 

This is no longer fit for purpose, I'm overrunning numerous tapes a week & BE2010 struggles with Windows 2012. I'm looking at replacing it with an LTO6 autoloader (or a cheap LTO4 autoloader on fleebay!)

 

Is Veeams Tape backup any good? I'm getting mixed messages about it, i.e if I need to restore a file from a VM on tape, I have to restore the entire backup (not just one VM!) first & then search the restored backup, rather than just selecting the files I need from the catalog & inserting the tape.

 

Our veeam licensing is due soon so I'm tempted to throw the entire system out & upgrade to SYmantec 2014 V-Ray, tho that'll no doubt cost a lot more.

We have 28 day retention on Disk that is attached to the Veeam server, for anything older than that and we need restore from tape I always restore the backup to a temp location first, the backup taken is of the datastore in our case. Unless I'm missing something.

 

We junked Backup Exec as soon as Veeam supported tape

Do you have the ability to search the tapes before restoring the backup? It'll be a massive pain if I have to restore the backup first before searching for a file

In Version 7 you can search for the VM then that tells what backup job and tape you need. Then as you say if you want individual Files you will probably need to restore to a temp location. Edited January 14, 2015 by Davit2005

There may be a way to do this and was wondering if someone can clarify this for me to make sure its not our system that is setup wrong..

 

In Veeam click on restore > select Guest Files (windows) > Select the VM the files are hosted on > Select the restore point > (optional) give it a reason > Click Finish > Wait for the Backup Browser to load > go to C:\VeeamFLR\*nameofVM*\*SelectVolume* then you are able to do a search as it displays the restore in explorer.
