If the two switches both support 802.3ad, does it matter if they are from different manufacturers?

I assume it's a standard algorithm for joining ports so as long as it's configured for the 2 ports on both switches it will work regardless of manufacturer.

Also, is cable length important i.e if one cable is a lot longer than the other due to taking a different route in the cable run?

Not a problem at all, LACP is a standard so shouldn't be an issue. We have some of our dlinks link aggregated to our HP cores. No different to a server really; you'll have an Intel/Broadcom NIC in a server link aggregated to a switch with a Cisco or HP core.

And no, cable length won't matter either. We used to have a long run to a cabinet that was over 100m, so it had a straight cable as well as a link aggregated cable to a closer switch then again to the further switch.
