PC drops first ping packet along with other things

Right, ive got a machine here which refuses to do anything on the net or net related however allows you to ping domains and ip addresses such as 8.8.8.8.

 

I know there isn't a problem with the network as this machine has been tried at work and at home and it gives the same response.

 

For some reason the machine will not browse the net with IE, Firefox or Chrome however it can ping 8.8.8.8 and bbc.co.uk but the first ping drops no matter if this ping is to an internal address or to an external address. Traceroute works fine and can traceroute to bbc.co.uk and 8.8.8.8.

 

I tried changing the Workgroup of the machine (this is a no domain machine) and IE, Firefox, Chrome worked for a little bit and then stopped working.

 

Ive run hijackthis... clean. Run Malwarebytes... clean. Ive run WinSock.. made no difference. Run netsh int reset... made no difference.

 

This machine is really driving me insane.

 

Can anyone help?

PS. ive also updated the drivers which has made no difference.

What does DNS look like?

 

I had a laptop exhibit these exact symptoms when it suffered a DNS hijacking malware.

Two things come to mind - firstly an aggressive firewall and secondly, try Safemode with Networking. If it works like this, then you have your answer.

DNS looks good. just flushed it and now got a few entries

 

cache.pack.google.com

 

1.0.0.127.in-addr.arpa = localhost

localhost = 127.0.0.1

 

avast - slcw.ff.avast.com = 77.234.73.77 / 76 / 89

Yup, I tried that. The logs looked promising but hasn't solved the problem.

what happens if you boot it from say a linux cd or pxe boot it does it work properly then?

Windows Firewall is turned off and safemode with networking doesn't work, what i mean by this is it doesn't show any pages but is given an address by DHCP.

Just tried knoppix, configured with an IP address and it displayed google and bbc without any problems.

Pinging its self (not the loop back) gives 4 responses just like a loop back response.

It sounds like Windows is knackered and seeing as Linux works, it proves it's not hardware. I think it's re-imaging time!

Yup, im just sticking windows back on as we speak and seeing as its a laptop, gparted the drive first, and then sticking another installation on next to it.

too late now but 2 things I would have tried..

 

1 ping google and use the returned ip address directly in one of your browsers.

2 turn off all hardware "enhancements" on the NIC (tcp offload etc) ((On cheap cards they're worse than not using them))

I pinged bbc and got their ip address, put that into a browser but nothing worked.

I can always try the second option but i dont think it will make any difference however will see what this new install does. The laptop has just being getting worse throughout the day.

Not too sure now. It got backed up last night and then wiped this morning. Things got really weird with the dam thing last night though. I refused to boot via the HDD and just showed the blink cursor in the top left. No attempt of even starting to boot from the hard drive. I booted the machine up via knoppix and the drive was still intact.

 

Ill be glad when this laptop gets handed back to the user.

 

On the plus side, after a clean install, things are now working as they should.
