Decided not to get a PS4 or Xbox1 but going to build a Gaming PC. Any advice

Yeah, but what can they do, really? The xbox controller feels better than the playstation controller because of the analogue and d-pad being swapped around.

And, annoyingly, wii u has the left stick in the right place but right one is above the buttons...

PSx both bottom

Xbox left top

Wii U both top

Stupid copyrights... Xbox layout should be standard.

The Last of Us isn't a particularly good shooter in terms of mechanics, the controls are clunky at best. It's been overhyped to oblivion almost entirely due to its storyline, atmosphere and music. If you look past all that and focus on the mechanics then it's just an average third person shooter, so not a particularly good game. Probably would have made a good film though.

And that's where Tomb Raider comes in everything of the Last Of Us, Amazing Graphics and great Gameplay I loved the bow :)

I believe you can get 3rd party controller for the Playstation that look/feel like xbox controllers.

Amazon.com: Afterglow AP.1 Controller for PS3 - Blue: Playstation 3: Video Games

Of course you can (I actually have an Afterglow 360 controller for my PC) but my point is that Sony can't officially change it to the thing that people in general find more comfortable. Which is a bit stupid.. But I guess not really. Sony made one controller, Microsoft made another (even if they are as close to identical as you can get without actually being so).. So therefore Sony, in theory, should pay Microsoft a licensing fee to use their design (even though they're basically identical, and the Playstation controller did come out first.. The XBOX controller is basically a modification of the Gamecube controller.. but then again the Gamecube controller is basically just a modification of the PS1 controller..) so should Sony really pay anything when other people have just made tiny tweaks? At the end of the day a line has to be drawn between what is IP and what is basic common bloody sense..

That design actually offends my sense of symmetry! For that reason I prefer the "look" of the PS3 controller to that of the XBox360 (old school!). In use I don't feel one is harder to use than t'other (though the default button mapping for the XBC in some PC games seems "odd" to me) but the Xbox controller does feel more solid and a seems to fit my mitts better.

Okay, more physically comfortable. Better? :D lol

The old XBOX controller (as in the first XBOX.. the chunky thing) felt horrible but the slimmer one that's produced now feels very nice in the hands.. But you're right. It is a little annoying that it's asymmetrical.

I'm one of the few that actually preferred the original XBox controller to the Controller-S, although I do only have Controller-S's for my current XBox :( Gonna have to e-bay a solution to that!

Which beggers the question, what makes a good game? I'd put those three above everything else, followed by controls and then gameplay mechanics - ordinarily. Graphics, resolutions, refresh rates, etc, are all way down on my list. Probably why I'm happy with consoles.

See, I hated the Tomb Raider reboot. It felt like a over zealous rail shooter that relied far to heavily on QTE's.

Symmetry is overrated.

Exhibit 1: a symmetrical controller that, much as I love the console, was pretty 'orrible:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/0/01/N64-Controller-in-Hand.jpg/291px-N64-Controller-in-Hand.jpg

I mean, honestly, did anyone pick that controller up for the first time and hold it correctly, or did everyone try and hold it round both shoulders and stretch their thumb to the analog stick? I used to use the L button (whenever a game used it) by bashing the controller against my leg.

The most comfortable controller ever might be the GameCube controller, I reckon. Just lovely to use that was, as weird as it looked.

For down right gameplay the PS4 is the best choice. The Xbox One I see more as an entertainment centre than a console nowadays. The PS4 will have better future proof ability also and will look better when playing hardcore games just because it's GPU has around 40% performance increase compared to the Xbox One.

They use the same GPU both AMD although the PS4 has around 1100 shaders where as the Xbox One has 700 odd shaders so games will ultimately run nicer and smoother one the PS4 than the Xbox as far as specs are concerned.

The Controllers don't bother me.... they're controllers they're all carp anyway. Why would you ruin a game by giving it the same layout of buttons everytime, where as on PC I have so many buttons to assign different actions to it can change my complete perspective on a game dependent on what I want.

I think if I was to get any console it'd be the Wii U who doesn't love Smash Bro's, Mario Kart and all that!? Nobody because they're awesome and always will be but Nintendo messed up big time when marketing the Wii U, most people just thought it was a controller for the Wii.

Just a point of note -

The Playstation controller is an evolution of the SNES and before that the NES controller. Pretty much came about thanks the the failed SNES-CD deal in the early 90's that directly lead to Sony developing the playstation.

The Xbox controller is an evolution of the Dreamcast controller, which itself is based on the 3D controller sold with Nights on the Saturn. Again it comes about because Sega and Microsoft worked quiet closely on both Dreamcast and later XBox. Dreamcast was based on the Windows CE OS.

AFAIK Gamecube was released after both PS2 and XBox so it's controller has little to do with anything and is Nintendo weird anyway.

It was a sound idea, though.. You'd always use the 6 buttons on the right-hand side.. If you wanted a D-Pad you used the left-hand side and the accopanying shoulder button. If you wanted an analogue stick you'd use the middle button and Z. I don't doubt there were a few daft games that tried to use all buttons but in general that was how games had their button mapping.

It just looked bizarre and felt even weirder to use.

Gamecube was 2 months prior to the XBOX according to their respective Wikipedia pages

The first game I ever played on n64 was OoT. I held the controller properly before I had even loaded into the game.

Guess I'm just a natural gamer. :p

Good point!

Though you'd have to do this to it to make it look sufficiently symmetrical to me.

Yellow buttons are still too high. 5/10 would not symmetry again.

I would put the ability to play the game above everything else, if you can't play the game without getting frustrated because the controls don't allow you to play the game then it doesn't matter how great the story is because you will likely be unable to experience it.

Pretty fundamental in my book!

In some ways I think that's the point and why most of these types of discussions are pretty moot. You pretty much need the right mixture of everything. I think that's were The Last of Us gets its reputation from and, for me, where Tomb Raider failed. Sure when you peel everything away the core gameplay in The Last of Us was nothing groundbreaking, and perhaps might be mediocre. However it was the right gameplay mechanics, the right attention to detail, that when mixed with that story gave something special.

Er... what? You hate controllers cos the buttons are always in the same place? What do you do, unpick all your keyboard keys and re-arrange them for every different game? Or if you're complaining that similar games use similar control layouts, then do you remap WASD everytime you play a new FPS so you can have a new layout every time?

The 360 was the best thing to happen to PC gaming in a long time because it finally gave us a standard controller. Strategy & FPS need M+K, but I hate hate hate driving games on a keyboard, tapping the A and D keys to get just the right amount of steer... urgh. I'll play with whatever works best and makes the most sense, same as I will with Smash Bros and Mario Kart on the Wii (i.e. get the GameCube controllers out, seriously, WiiMotes are terrible for those games).

QWERY for Word, DOVAK for Excel - I thought that was the norm !?!

You put into words what my mushy brain wanted to. I didn't quite understand why people were pulling it to bits about the mechanics when i've heard the story is pretty damn good. I dunno about you guys, but i think a good story is important too, gets you hooked. I liked running around and climbing stuff in TR, but the (lack of) story made it a real chore.

....Mindlessly running around and blowing things up can also be good.

Driveclub is a pile of....

Hope you're happy with yourself.

The driving in Driveclub is very, very good, the problem was the game didn't work at launch and for several weeks afterwards due to server issues and bugs.

It's very different now, it still plays well, it now works as intended, has more free stuff because of the issues and looks utterly stunning. Can be picked up for £20 new too.

You will not believe it but my mum has just transferred enough money to get the fence fixed and more. Looks like the PC build is back on. Just got to find the correct section in this 22 page forum that has all the info I need to start buying. Think I was up to choosing a case.

WOW how things change.

A) Were you not bookmarking this stuff?

B) Does your mum know you're spending her money on this? Be a little bit rude if she thinks you're just fixing the fence D:

What type of case should I get for the hardware I am getting. They seem to do ATX, Full Tower e-ATX, midi ATX etc.

I am OK with the one in this post that @LeMarchand found but I can not find it on ebuyer.

Sharkoon VS3-V Black Case, Green Application ATX Case - Ebuyer

Apart from one of the cases above having green lights would one of them be preferred over the others?

The one I found was on Amazon, but I'd suggest waiting for someone to recommend a decent case. (Though this will probably be a lot more than the ones you've looked at! Especially when @Sunnyknight returns).

I personally have a Gigabyte GZ-G1 Plus, which was way overpriced, but I really liked the look of.

@edutech4schools

You build a gaming rig a kill it with a shoddy case....... is this your first build ever?

You have to take into consideration water cooling (if being used or planned for future ) otherwise the push / pull flow of your case / psu / cpu fans. Ive had cheap cases in the past and learnt from it. Dont make the same mistake.

At least get a fricking decent case if not anything else with enough space inside and decent amount of fan slots. Not to mention youll have a doddle with cable management, which may seem no problematic, but its a lot of hassle if you dont have the space. come summer, you may just thank me.

Nzxt / corsair / bitfenix / coolmaster cases are best at around £100.

I'm not being aggressive in any way, but if you spend around that much, least make it look decent on the outside and breathable on the inside.

The case doesn't really matter in terms of performance (unless you have no case fans) but you still want to pick a case you like the look of.. Personally I'd recommend picking up replacement fans as stock fans are usually a little shoddy, but that's just me, maybe I'm being picky.

Air flow is important, though. Hot air is less dense and rises. Intake at the front and the bottom, exhaust at the back and the top.

scenario7b1kc.jpg

Front fan is usually primary intake as the vast majority of the time you can guarantee nothing will be blocking it. If you pick a case with side fans, they usually have either 2 slots, or one at the bottom. Not all cases have side fans, though. My case for example has a single fan at the front-bottom corner on each side as intake. A lot of cases also have a fan at the very bottom of the case, but there's a bit of a hit-or-miss as to how useful these are.. If you don't have tall feet or your case propped up at an angle it's going to suffer, and being close to the ground it's going to suck up a lot of crud - so if you're limited to fans, consider not using that very bottom slot.
