Indeed without performing SSL decryption your filter will only ever see the top level domain of an ssl site so sites.google.com this is why your blocking isn't working as you think it should.

You'll need the client certificate from the smoothwall box installed on the client machines for this too - send it out using a GPO (apply it to authenticated users). You'll also, obviously, need to set up rules for HTTPS inspection.

 

Rather than filtering individual URLs, I decided not to faff about with games etc - I used some URL patterns. That way when new study hall/other game site brings out a new URL, if my existing patterns cover it off, it is automatically filtered, if not I just add one.

 

Interestingly enough, it also filters their search results for these games too!
