ZeroHour Posted December 18, 2014 Posted December 18, 2014 I am struggling to decide on what phone to get next, currently I have a Lumia 920 and I do love the hardware but its aged now. I have looked at the 930 and its a nice upgrade over the 920 but not quite enough of a leap also I am getting more and more concerned MS are losing the plot with WP and their focus. They should have bought HERE maps but they didnt and now they are looking to go Android/iOS I am starting to fear the updates. The other thing that annoys me is the lack of apps. Its a lot better than it was but I am starting to suspect the hold outs are not coming but this may all change with the new Visual Studio which allows you to port much easier. So that leaves android or iOS.... tempted by phablets more now after using the other halfs Note 2 (she went to an iPhone 6) which doesnt seem as oversized as it did. Googles lack of control on the store does concern me and Samsung's touchwiz has been hit and miss in the past too but iOS is well a bit meh. WP still has the best start screen/home IMO but without the full featured apps (looking at you spotify without your local file sync) its a bit moot. What phones should I look at and if you have any of them what niggles do you have? Really I think the choices are: Samsung S5 Note 4 iPhone 6+ iPhone Nexus 6 But I may have missed some.

What was your previous phone? I have been burned badly with Samsung everytime I have got one which is why I fear them a bit. Those old clamshell phones had a crazy bug where it could deal with +44/0 at the front of numbers meaning you had to save all as +44 to get the phone book to work with texts. Also a friend with the Note 1 had the internal memory fail, my other half had the 2 and it basically killed itself over 2 years and runs like a dog now although a little better after a fresh wipe.

They must have made a better job of it than the S4 Mini. Worst phone I've owned. It was a constant trial of my patience. And the battery rarely lasted until bedtime! Using an iPhone 5 now and it's been lovely, really stable, great battery life and does everything I need. My colleague James says the 6 Plus is definitely worth a look, he's got one and keeps raving about it. That said, the missus is using the Nokia 1020 and loves it. so maybe worth looking at or holding out for it's long rumoured successor?

I do want to hold out a bit till the impending 20th announcement but I really miss having admin apps on other platforms. The plus with iOS is google always release their own apps on it AND you get Apples. Android its google kool aid or nothing. The other plus with going with three is the phones are unlocked so if I really hate it I can flog it for a minimal hit.

I had a Sony Xperia U which was really slow, but after 2 years it just about lasted!

After holding the note 2 trying to fix it the last few days the size is not a problem now tbh. I hated them when they came out (and pretty much until a few days ago) but the other perk is a better battery (note 4 as well)

HTC One M8, lovely phone. I too miss my iPhone. Can't find a good music app on android and nothing beats iTunes on the PC, I'll probably go back to iPhone next time since 64Gb models (which I need for my tunes) will be within my price range/monthly budget by then.

Upgraded to a Sony Xperia Z3 in October shortly after they came out and absolutely loving the hardware, camera and the Sony interface (very very close to stock Android). The Samsung I'd rooted and was forever changing Roms trying to change one that I liked (probably one of the reasons I disliked the S4), but the Z3 I've left stock as for me it just works and is a lovely phone. So, if you hadn't guessed, consider the Z3

I would wait until the release of the S6 (Brand new build) it is supposed to be the DB's Daughter has had IPhones for the past 4 years but they are so tightly controlled it took her 12 weeks to get it unblocked for all services an cost her money too even when we had asked for a pay as you go on all services (Guy at the phone shop sold us a pup). Nearly everyone I speak to has had problems with their phones whether it be IOS, Android or MS, to me you pays yer money and yer makes your choice depending on what you want to do with your phone. I personally would not take out another phone on contract, I will just buy a cheap huawei and a Sim only contract for around a tenner! Rip off's the lot of em!

And it's virtually stock Android, but you never know there could be a rootkit in there somewhere... Really like the Z3 though - the magnetic charging is brilliant, Just clips into the dock and charges pretty damm quickly. Much prefer it to the Qi charging pads that I've used with other phones. Other than inserting the SIM card and a 64gb microSD card haven't had to open up any of the port covers since buying the phone. Means that I can take it swiming/dunk it in the sink to clean the screen without issue or worrying. Ohh yeah did I not mention that it's waterproof?

Can't do playlists properly, doesn't like the memory card, a right pita! (I've got it doing both but it makes sure I know it's unhappy about it, grrr). I've got all my music uploaded to Google Play and the metadata has been borked. Not sure if the All Access subscription is worth it. If music is important go for the iPhone 6+!

If music is important go for the iPhone 6+! Offline files do work well in spotify now, you just have to add them to spotify on the desktop then when both are running on wifi it syncs it across. I actually moved away from iTunes App (on phone) to Spotify as my music player because it would wireless sync and had both collections of music. Also you dont need to pair your phone with iTunes to copy some music, just run spotify on a pc/mac on the same network and you are off. Edited December 18, 2014 by ZeroHour

flyinghaggis Posted December 18, 2014 Posted December 18, 2014 Still using my iPhone 4S and TBH if I needed to replace it I'd probably follows the iSheep flock and go for an iPhone 6... Yeah, IOS is a bit meh and not very customisable but everything generally works reliably and I haven't had any issues with my previous iPhones. If Google had released an updated version of the Nexus 5 I'd had been tempted to upgrade to that but I personally think the Nexus 6 is too large and it's priced so high it's no longer the bargain that the Nexus 5 was.
