Virtual Redundant Controller

Morning Guys,

 

Looking at replacing our wireless system here and looking at a physical controller as the primary with a redundant VM, do all the companies do this generally? Only heard it on meru so far.

Look at unifi - no expensive hardware controller to buy at all.

What's UniFi like for all the "normal" kinda things like BYOD/portals etc? honestly not looked at it before

Its great. Use it here with full BYOD and the Captive Portal just works (Controller must be active at all times for that).

 

~500 Wireless devices - ~80 -100 Active at any time.

I cant believe there are still people on here that haven't heard of Unifi!

 

Not everyone's cup of tea, may be too basic for some or too complex for others. Certainly worth considering if you are a "Can Do" hands on type of NM as it saves many people £££££'s (much to the disgust of some of the sponsors here).

 

I brought Unifi to this forum, I imported them from the US and EU for my own projects and ended up selling hundreds of them to other Geeks who all love them.

However as the system is so cheap there isn't a lot of money to be made out of selling them, especially as more of the box shifters got involved whilst trying to snare other business.

 

I'm not bitter though,

I blew the company pension pot on ubnt shares when they were $10 and got out when they were $55 so whilst your all working until your 65 and beyond I will be sipping a beer on a beach somewhere ;D thanks to everyone's ever increasing enthusiasm for the product.

 

I'm still very much however hardware agnostic, every vendors wireless has its place some better suited than others to specific needs.

Unifi support is limited to a community forum with ubnt staff moderating so you get what you pay for.

If you want someone on the phone 8x5 with NBD swap out warranty buy something else as that's not the UBNT model.

 

I tell everyone the same thing, buy a single band Unifi and try it. If it doesn't float your boat in school, you will take it home and at least have a heck of a home wifi system!

In my largest site we have over 50 AP's often have 200+ users on a single UAP Pro with over 2000 concurrent users being the largest number seen on the system!

My problems are never the wireless, its always that I run out of bandwidth (or IP addresses) first.

Never mind, the Gigabit Internet Line will be in soon and we can add a few more points.

 

I've got dozens of small sites with 1 or 2 AP's all Cloud managed on Azure which is great.

 

Before you part with a bucket load of cash you ought to try it!

Ruckus now do a VM version of their ZoneDirector.

 

Not sure on backup configs but you can certainly run it in a cluster to ensure of uptime.

I agree with your points and they are valid, however I can't understand why the Unifi is not taken seriously by expert reviewers or that so many customers are buying the Ruckus, airohive aruba etc. There must be something that the others cost so much i.e. management, failover, or quicker replacement units. I know your idea of keep a few APs spare but then you are still paying for these, we have a couple of spare ruckus APs here to replacement it immediately should one go down.

 

I'm not so sold on the idea that Unifi ticks all the boxes or ticks boxes with ease. I'm sure for people who have it is really good and its refreshing to see that there are alternatives available that are cheaper.
