I have SCCM installed and working, well mostly!! I have a number of windows updates deployed in different deployments. Almost all of the the machines on site have installed them and report back fine. However I have about 7 that the console report as status unknown on the deployment status. I have manually checked the machines and they have the same updates installed as the machines that are reporting back fine. I am not sure where to start looking.... anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

How long have they been in that status? You could try kicking of a manual cycle of the "Software Updates Deployment Evaluation Cycle" and "Software Updates Scan Cycle" to see if that gives it a nudge.

After that I would fire up CMTrace and start looking through the client logs to see if the machines are able to successfully report their state back to the server.

This is the usual problem that I've seen with it. It can also take a little while for SCCM to update it's reporting on them after running this, I'd give it 30 mins or so to be sure.

It's been a week or two now! I have been so busy with other things that I have only had the chance to look at it this morning. Tried the suggestions so far and no joy. I guess I am going to have to hit the logs and see what I can find. Only problem is I am not sure what I'm looking for!

Using CMTrace to read the logs will help by flagging up errors in red.

I would have a look at:

  • StatusAgent.log - to see if status updates are being created
  • CcmMessaging.log - to see if messages are being sent to MP
  • CcmExec.log - always good to look for errors
