Hi I'm newish to sims, an administrator.

anyone got any tips/documents with advice on administering and configuring etc

any help would be great

Run as far away as you can, as quickly as you can.

In all seriousness, sign up on capita's forums, keep an eye on here. And above all never ever do an upgrade the day it comes out :)

TIP#1 Setting up the workstations for regular users means you will have to tweak file permissions. There are threads on here (search for simsperm or simsperm.bat) and you should be OK.

TIP #2 If you're doing updates out of hours, allow for approx:

15 minutes + (number of patches to apply * 30 mins)

That is unless they've managed to fix the all-new slow backup procedure.

TIP #3 If there's an FMS update waiting, book a flight somewhere warm with no extradition treaties with the UK.

Well ok on topic of a sims skypecast what sort of content would you like to see off top of my head are you thinking along lines of.

- Intro to sims.net and what differences are between .net and legacy apps such as fms/nova-t. Bit of history on why things are the way they are.

- Tips and hints on doing upgrades?

- Info on how to set up users and setting groups etc.

- Some of backend stuff to do with sims where files are kept, folder structures etc.

Anything else people would like covered? what time and days are best for people.

I was think about writing a guide to migrating sims to a new server if anyone would be interested. Its taken alot of work but I think I have a procedure now. it should also help people in disaster recovery situations as well.
