Patrick Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 Hi all, We are a small primary school that have a fair amount of devices. This morning, one of the teachers has informed me that a class of 30, so thats 30 laptops, had issues loading "the internet". Turns out they all logged on ok (Unifi AP's) but when they all tried to login to bug club some just hanged and some took 20 minutes she said. Speedtest.net reports the line speed (at lunch time) to be downloading 8mbs and uploading at 7.7mbs. I wasn't around to witness the problem so can't say for sure if everything she told me is fact, but i'm looking for second opinions. Do you think the internet line speed was the issue? http://www.speedtest.net/result/3959222481.png Thanks!
witch Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 20 minutes seems a bit long. We often have 15 to 20 children logging on to bug club with no issues but sometimes it does take a bit longer to get on to the site. You did have quite a few trying to get on at the same time. I suppose it might have been a glitch with the internet but I don't think you will ever know unless it happens again.
hardtailstar Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 http://www.speedtest.net/result/3959236168.png We are down in Kent. not much better!
synaesthesia Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 Quite possibly; thats 273KBps per device. Althought back in the days of 56k modems and 128k ISDN that doesn't seem drastic, modern websites are built around decent bandwidth availability. Bug club is all flash/media rich, so that wouldn't surprise me at all. Take a look at the usage graphs/figures from the unifi controller, you'll get a good idea of how much data is being shifted from that.
Patrick Posted December 4, 2014 Author Posted December 4, 2014 (edited) Umm..this is weird. Looking at the controller it only shows 9 devices connected at that time? It probably load balenced the clients to the other AP, but the traffic for that period was close to 4GB at around the time of 12PM. That much traffic coming down the line at one time may well bring it to a crawl. What do you guys think? Edited December 4, 2014 by Patrick
Oaktech Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 We've had problems accessing bug club this week, I was abit perplexed too. I can see that our smoothie says we are using almost all our bandwidth, but it's not been much of a problem before now and our browsing habits haven't changed much. We have 10mb down and 1.5 up and it's previously been slow but working.
