fiza Posted November 28, 2014 Posted November 28, 2014 A question to those schools that have official school youtube channels. Do you get permission from parents before you post videos that include students in them?
Steve21 Posted November 28, 2014 Posted November 28, 2014 Don't use YouTube channels, but in regards to any normal video/promotional material think it's normally done as part of the standard "can I have pics" policies. Steve

Steve We have those policies too but I think youtube is different. When we take images they go up on our website which only people looking for our school will come across. Youtube is different in that everyone goes there and comments on videos etc.
PotNoodleTech Posted November 28, 2014 Posted November 28, 2014 You don't need parental permission in order to use photographs/footage internally, e.g. within SIMS or for lesson observation purposes. You do need permission if there is any chance the photo/footage may be available externally, e.g. newsletter, website, youtube. You also need explicit permission, parents need to opt in to photos being made externally available, not opt out. When we changed the policy from "if you do not wish to please tick here" to "if you do allow please tick here" the number of successful permissions dropped drastically.
fiza Posted November 28, 2014 Author Posted November 28, 2014 You also need explicit permission, parents need to opt in to photos being made externally available, not opt out. Anywhere I can see the guidance on this? I have look on the ico website https://ico.org.uk/for_organisations/sector_guides/education but can only see guidance on photos.
PotNoodleTech Posted November 28, 2014 Posted November 28, 2014 (edited) I'll try and find out for you! Ours were originally adopted via LEA but not sure if they arranged it, or if it was taken from national guidelines / independent authority guidelines? Edit - Having just ready your link, the ICO guidelines are indeed very...er...basic. E.g. it says permission given my pupil/parent - well which? The two are legally different entities? Is the permission meant to be verbal, at the time, or written before hand? Edited November 28, 2014 by PotNoodleTech
spadam Posted November 28, 2014 Posted November 28, 2014 We have those policies too but I think youtube is different. When we take images they go up on our website which only people looking for our school will come across. This is not strictly true as once you post something to your school website it will likely be indexed by search engines and could potentially appear in image results not at all related to your school. Also there is then the possibility of someone reposting an image from your website to any other website if they wish. I am not aware of any distinction between video and still images in terms of the measures that you should take to ensure that they are used appropriately.. We don't distinguish between the two here. We do obtain explicit parental consent though (just once / student) before publishing any images of students anywhere outside of the school though and each year we send a reminder letter to parents saying that they have / have not consented to this and to inform us if they wish to change their preference. 1
Sylv3r Posted November 28, 2014 Posted November 28, 2014 We have internal Photo consent, but also separate explicit photo consent for out website, school newsletter, Facebook, youtube etc.
