How are you all doing it?

I've started running an after school club (teaching students Python via the Minecraft API) and we want to back up all their work.

Only had one session so far, whereby I went round with a USB stick after they'd left, but it took ages.

I was thinking of a script to map their network home folders when they provide their network login details - anybody tried that?

Any other ideas?

While I haven't tried this on a Pi yet what I'm planning to do for our permanent units (the ones that will be imaged and controlled by IT, not the ones we're going to teach OS installs on in other words) is install SAMBA and do a domain bind so that users will be able to use their network credentials to log in to the Pi. From there I'd just have the system mount their home drive since they're already domain authenticated it should work without an issue. It's been a while since I did the modifications to a stock Linux install but it shouldn't be terribly difficult on most modern distros.

Edit: It's a bit old but all the steps should be roughly the same: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/2008.12.linux.aspx?pr=blog.

As AdonMalik suggest above, you can should be able to join a Raspberry Pi to a Windows domain with Samba. This thread might help:

http://www.edugeek.net/forums/nix/48032-configuring-samba.html

That thread is now 5 years old, with updates and various bits changed over two pages, but might make a decent place to start. I have a whole Samba-based domain, both clients (Linux and Windows) and server, at home, and it certainly seems to work well and in a stable manner.

Saving PI work needs some effort going into it

My samba auto install

Auto install a Simple Samba Setup - Cymplecy (Simplesi)

At my primaries, I jsut make sure each group gets same Pi each week - manually method but simple

You could have a little batch script to copy from a certain ip to a certain user folder maybe

I've been waiting for FOundation to help out with this but they've done naff all - don't really seem interested in practical help to schools so we need to do it ourselves

I'll be doing more of this as I use Pi more and more in my schools on a regular basis but any help from proper net mans always welcome

Simon
