Please help blue screen of death

when I try to boot up my PC it is comming up with the dreaded blue screen and will not start. this is the first couple of lines of the error message can any one help me with any ideas please

 

C0000218 {registry file faliure} The registry cannot find the hive {file}: SystemRoot\System32\Config\Security - its log or alternate. is corrupt absent or not writeable

It is probably either a duff install of XP, or, if the machine has been OK up until now, then I would suspect the hard drive is failing

Diverging abit but how many ppl actually tried the 'Last known good config' and it worked. I think I've only had 1 occation where it worked.
