Way before I read any of this I upgraded my MacBook Pro with a samsung 840 pro in and it works just fine. And has done so for a while now.

Why are apple such a pain! How are you supposed to upgrade?

They didn't get to be one of the richest companies in the world by making it easier for you to upgrade rather than buy new kit!

Yeah. Third-party SSDs work fine with Yosemite despite sensationalist headlines to the contrary.

Enabling TRIM on third-party SSDs has never been officially supported by Apple. The only difference with Yosemite is you have to disable kext signing now in order for the patched .kext to work. The TRIM Enabler app does this for you automatically.

Of course you don't have to enable TRIM. :)
