Haha! Just thought I'd add my bit! I didnt type that out by the way, I just translated something I might normally say. I struggle to understand 'text speak'. It frightens me when I get a text message from any of my younger sisters because it takes a few minutes to try to make sense of it. Not only this but even my mum texts this way now!

Another ironing tip - always use two thickish fabric covers not one on the ironing board - it's easier to get rid of the creases in the clothes due to the extra 'padding' underneath.

 

And you always start with the collar - and you're supposed to iron both sides of it. Same with the cuffs.

Yes, it does. We are supposed to be professional people, communicating about professional subjects and we should do it in as professional a manner as possible.

 

On another forum, where I moderate, we are strict on "SPAG" as a mistake with mains electricity and hanging big, heavy stuff above peoples heads could be worse than embarrassing. It is TOTALLY accepted that there will be spelling errors, mis-applied apostrophes, and other grammar lapses, but we expect people to at least TRY. It is quite heartening to look at the posts that some of the "dyslexics" wrote a couple of years ago, and compare them to their current styles. Something must be working for them...

 

The comments about non-native speakers trying to translate txt spk is but one reason to keep to "Queen's English" if you can.

Whilst I've already said that txt speak irritates me, people keep going on about how this is meant to be a professional forum, yet, in my mind it's slightly confusing if we still have things like this and the recent post of the girls using CDs as mirrors. But that wasn't what richard was on about in the beginning, he was on about deliberate laziness making it hard to answer requests for help!

 

(By the way, don't get me wrong, I like the fun side to EduGeek!)

Perhaps a bit of general netiquette guidance for all is needed.

 

When writing posts you should always consider your target audience. If it is not full of those who are fluent in txt-speak (or other flavours) then try to avoid it. Where possible, use full and correct language to ensure that there is little room for mis-comprehension.

 

Pedantry, purely for the sake of it, achieves little without the understanding of why there is an issue with language. If you see mistakes, don't jump on them but observe. If you are unsure of language used, ask for clarification.

 

And most of all, accept that dyslexia, dyspraxia or other impairments to communication exist but should neither be used as an excuse for laziness nor as a vector for attack. A little understanding goes a long way.

 

When there is a spare few minutes this may get entered into the wiki as general posting guidance.
