Hi all at the moment we have no job system, I'm a one man band here so its easy enough to use email and outlook calendar.

I want to build an online jobsystem using MYSQL as the backend database.

I have looked at prepackaged things like these ;-

5 open source help desk apps to watch - CIO

But what I really want is just a simple web page with our branding that when a user logs into our intranet it recognises the user and allows them to create a task.

I have no time frame for this and its a learning exercise. Essentially what I am looking for is if anyone else has gone this route may be able to provide any pearls of wisdom for me, or suggest any courses (preferably free) to help me along the way.

Save yourself a bunch of time and get Spiceworks. It's great tool for helpdesk/ticket system and can be configured to use SSO so staff don't even need to sign in and can just log tickets. It's got a bunch of other useful tools including a network monitoring section and a huge (and very helpful) community. I've been using it for a few years now at two different jobs and everyone that's used it at both really likes it.

Got spiceworks its Ok for inventory and network stuff but I don't rate the helpdesk as far as I have seen. Can you drop in iframe into a web page with spiceworks.

We use one called OSTicket http://osticket.com its open source so very customisable. I'm in the process of setting it up with our intranet so it knows who they are, but in the mean time, a simple PHP script can be used to send an email from the staff intranet to the help desk.

Works very well!
