User profile service failed the logon

Hi All,

 

I'm getting the error as stated in the title. But when I've googled (other search engines are available) it, there only seems to be fixes for when a user has already logged on and the account has become corrupt. My issue is that I have a newly built windows 7 machine, which I have added to the domain, but the only user I can log on successfully with is the user I used to authenticate the machine to the domain with. All other domain logon attempts are met by the error and then I am returned to the logon screen.

 

Any help would be much appreciated. I can probably just rebuild the machine and it will be fine but I've had this a few times now and would like to know what's causing the problem

It could be any of a number of things - that error covers a lot.

 

Check your Event Viewer, System and Application logs, and you will find more information there.

 

At a guess, though, it's either not enough disk space (unlikely on a newly imaged machine) or permissions on the roaming profile share (Domain Computers needs access).

I first encountered this in January, following an update.

Basically, you need to delete the local profile. See above post for details

Thanks for the replies guys, not been in the office this afternoon but ill take a look at the link tomorrow. As I said though, this is a newly built machine so there is no local profile to delete as the users haven't yet had a successful logon apart from the user I joined the domain with which can log on no problem, ill post an update if I get a solution tomorrow

Just an update to sat that the solution from JNStiles fixed the problem, Just selected replace all child objects in the security settings for the C:\users\Default folder and all users can now log on fine, must be a windows update issue

There is an easier solution, which is to reboot in safemode (it let's you login) and then restore to an earlier time. user profile service failed the logon
