Ive had a teacher ask why pinterest is blocked. Ive never used the site before.

 

Is this site a social media site and whats everyone elses view/thought on this bearing in mind said teacher has said they have planned a full lesson round it.... *sigh*

Thanks, i will see how our smoothie lets users on the site. Like i said, never seen pinterest before, i guess its like flickr and other types.

 

Our teacher said they need it for a gcse project which has been planned on pinterest.

 

I wait for certain people to ask for reasons why its blocked and then start demanding it to be unblocked, to which point i feel why am i here? Why do we have filtering in place?

It annoys me when things are planned without even basic testing

We allow it with one important caveat - we've only unblocked one Art teacher's page, so the only page students can access is her moderated area, rather than giving them a free for all.

 

This means she can pin useful/interesting content there and know that students can see it, and we know that kids are wandering the dark and dodgy corners of the site. Requires a bit more work from her but she has no problem with it; YMMV.

Well it turns out it is turned on for the lessons this teacher needs it - i knew this would happen... the teacher is to email us when this is needed. Also, the kids have been using their personal email addresses for this kind of thing, what's the point in having a school email address!?!

I would say "no, sorry". Any site which has the ability to reveal pornography or related materials is just a plain and simple no.

As per the larger thread, absolutely not. If they need to use images from it, perhaps they should be preparing/planning beforehand and downloading them. The curriculum doesn't tell anyone to use a specific site.

What can you do? There are a few things you can do, if your delegated the responsibility you say no, and await the response until your overruled by the Head.

Or you email the person responsible and get them to make the decision, implement it and job done.

 

Any responsible person who being forced to unblock the site in question, with the evidence at hand should uses the whistle blowing policy to blow the lid directly to the governors to minimize the damage.

 

It wont win you any friends but if doing the right thing overrides doing your duty then you just keep going up the chain using whatever policies you can until someone sees sense.

Put it in writing that you are being asked to unfilter a website containing pornography, that you will do it but you seriously object to doing so. Also include warnings that teachers have been fired at various schools for gross misconduct for showing such materials in the past.
