Hello,

One of our IT teachers has asked if it would be possible to install WAMP (WampServer, the web development platform on Windows - Apache, MySQL, PHP) on a PC for him to help with a student of his who is using WAMP at home for his project. As this is a web server application I am concerned about the implications this might have for the network and whether it could inter fear with our web servers etc.

I don't know alot about wamp so am a bit weary. Has anybody got any advise or had a similar scenario?

Thanks

I suspect it will have some issues running under his own user account, and the elevated privileges it would require could open up his PC too much. If you could shove it on an expendable VM it may work though.

Thanks for your replies. I'm not really looking to setup a server as its only for him to help one student. I could install it on the teachers PC but I am just concerned of the implications of essentially installing a web service on a client PC and not knowing how it works as I haven't used it before. The standard user account permissions could be an issue though. Perhaps just setup a VM on the PC with no network access so he can have access to the software?

Thanks

Something else to consider if Windows client OS has a connection limit. So if all the students go to hit machine via a web interface you will probably hit that limit so it won't work anyway.

Hi guys,

Just an update. I successfully setup a Win 7 VM with a wamp installation for the teacher to use, using Windows Virtual PC. This is working pretty well and Windows Virtual PC works as a standard user. Thanks for all your replies.

We do this to provide a programming environment to pupils. All of the computing pc's have a VM including Visual Studio 2013, WAMP, IIS, python etc. The VM has no network, but has a mapped drive back to the users own mydocuments.

Works really well.

permissions shouldn't be an issue, I've used XAMPP with locked down training accounts before with no issues, had it running on 12 machines simultaneously with no impact outside of those machines.
