craigw Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 With Google Drive (and office 365) going unlimited - what are peoples views on allowing the desktop app installed on the PCs. Any concerns with drive space filling up (multiple users on each desktop - including staff), security, or the amount of bandwidth that will be taken up syncing data back and forth? My view is that why do staff or students need local copies of EVERYTHING if it is all available in the cloud on demand (albeit a bit slower). Note - we are not 1:1 laptop school. Cheers Wally
robjd Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 I fear for the local backup that google drive requires so don't allow it at the moment. Hoping one day we can just map the thing but in the same breath, I would rather my staff just migrated to gdocs full time.
rdk Posted November 1, 2014 Posted November 1, 2014 We're 1:1 fully gdocs and we don't have the desktop app installed on teachers or students. One reason is there's no need if your internet connection is fine, and the second reason is that you can't sync behind an authenticated proxy.
ass17 Posted November 1, 2014 Posted November 1, 2014 Not to mention the app hates network home drives!! Throws a wobbly everytime. The app is not required when you can set your server to auto sync data from a persons home folder to their gdrive.
NotSoFast Posted November 1, 2014 Posted November 1, 2014 The app is not required when you can set your server to auto sync data from a persons home folder to their gdrive. How did you do this? There's another thread on here somewhere where people are wishing for a way to achieve this!
ass17 Posted November 1, 2014 Posted November 1, 2014 My apologies I thought ClearOS could do it but I have re-read there website twice and they sync exactly what GADS does
edutech4schools Posted November 2, 2014 Posted November 2, 2014 We use the desktop version at all my schools but it is used in the same way as a USB memory key would be used and not as a replacement to shared server drives.
Tall_Paul Posted November 3, 2014 Posted November 3, 2014 Some of our teachers have it. Not impressed to be fair. The auto-sync is broken here so they have to manually poke it every time they want to sync.
