Apple Configurator Supervised Ipads - Retrieve Pictures using a Windows Laptop

Morning,

 

Apologies if this question has been asked before I had a hunt through previous threads but could not find a related post.

 

With a Mac Mini Server running Apple Configurator I have 60+ ipads that are currently supervised and running fine, the only issue I have run into so far is that when plugging the devices into a windows laptop I am unable to retrieve photos / videos on the devices. As you can imagine this is extremely frustrating for staff and students when wanting to quickly pull off the photo / video they have just made.

 

I can understand the reasons for security to lock them in supervised mode but with the school only having the one mac osx device it will be difficult to have this accessible for a user to plug in and retrieve there media.

 

I've played with the idea of setting up mapped drives to the mac server and trying to auto import photos using iPhoto to shared folders on the mac server but with the users trawling through hundreds of photos and the mac mini hard drives running out of space very quickly I can see this as a non starter.

 

Any recommendations would be gratefully appreciated!

set up dropbox on the windows server, set it to go into a shared area.

 

Install dropbox on the ipads and link them to the same account. Remember to disable auto-upload of camera roll!

 

Photos can then be put onto dropbox and accessed via shared drive on windows computer!

Assuming you don't fancy going down the route of setting up WebDAV then there is a quick fix that has worked well for us. If you install an app called WiFi Photo Transfer:

Then you can browse directly to the iPad's Camera Roll and transfer over your wireless network to your PC / Mac. You can zip multiple files for transfer, but be aware that transferring long video files can take a while depending on your WLAN speed (as you'd expect).

Might be worth a try at least, the app is free after all.

I think turning on "Allow devices to connect to other macs" should fix this problem, if for some reason this is turned off already.

As per above, "Allow devices to connect to other macs" but I haven't found a way of doing it without unsupervising / re-supervising the ipads to achieve this, which means putting all the apps on again. It wasnt an option in early versions of configurator.

Just to add to the suggestions, we have a product called AirCatch. It allows users to send pictures and data created in apps via the "Send" or "Share" function which is found within most apps and iOS. There is no app to install on the devices and all pictures can simply be sent to a users own home folder, a teachers work folder or any specified share on a windows network! Dead easy.

AirCatch seems really simple. Wonder if you have to resend the profile every time you add a new folder.

Hi Alis_Klar,

 

We have tried to make it as simple as possible, bearing in mind the users the software has been targeted at.

 

There is no need to resend the profile, the iOS devices update by themselves, sometimes instantly, sometimes 15 mins. However, you can force the device to update by swiping down a contact group on the device

Not just pictures but all docs, I have setup a mail account that all iPads will email to a single address in the contacts list, attachment linking will strip out attachments from emails and then a script will run to move the attachments to a shared folder.

Our mail server is mdaemon.
