Hello,

Does nayone have any idea how to force all devices on our home network to use a proxy server on a pc we have on that network (squid).

We have many varients of laptops, phones, tables etc from children and family and friends using our WLAN, and LAN. I want everyone who uses the network to be forced to go through squid (or I can use another proxy server if necessary).

You know the idea, like when you connect to a WIFI in a hotel or where-ever and they can limir what sites you can or cant see.

After a bit of reading round, it seems I may be able to do it with a WPAD on the machine that the proxy runs on, if I name the machine WPAD. The devices then just have to allow automatic configuration. This would do it via DNS, as the router we use will allow me to specify that machine as the Domain Name Server and I can run some DNS software on there.

It seems very complex and I cant beleive there are any number of parents who have lost track of all the devices on their home networks so setting up each device to use the proxy isnt an option and just want to introduce a proxy between the router in the house and the internet.

Has anyone done it? If so how.

Thanks

Tony

Generally if you want it for everything it'd be easier to have squid behind your router. So it's doing it directly on the incoming connection effectively making your own transparent proxy. But guess this depends on your setup etc

Thanks both of you. So please excuse the terrible quality of the diagram but does this describe what I need to implement a transparent router?

We have many devices coming in on ethernet, and many more connecting wirelessly.

I need them all coming together before going into the "server", then our of the "server" on a second NIC card to the router?

Im sure theres much more to it, but if this is roughly the architecture I can keep reading up. If I'm miles off I can re think

(I cant beleive many parents arent looking for this - or maybe they are and just get it better then I do)
