Using Exchange 2010 to send external mail rather than Smarthost

Hi

Not having a very good track record with my ISP, I was thinking of moving away from the smart host that is causing delays in external emails (esp yahoo, gmail etc) we own our domain name through 123.reg, is it a simple matter of getting my ISP to map their external IP address for my Exchange to send mail, then editing the send connector to take it off their smart host? Any guide to do this and any pitfalls using Exchange as SMTP direct?

Just want to have reliable external email delivery!

Thanks as always
