Tammie Posted October 6, 2015 Posted October 6, 2015 Moving from Meraki then? I still have the one ID but I'm just waiting for it not to work any more. Yesterday I couldn't deploy a paid app and I thought the worst, but this morning (as I had hoped, after a good night's sleep!) it has gone on. Phew! I've asked Meraki for a quote for the paid Systems Manager, nothing so far. I don't think we'll pay it though, so I had started to make some Apple IDs to move to individual ones rather than an institutional one. Interested to hear you're going down the Profile Manager route though!
Joanne Posted October 6, 2015 Author Posted October 6, 2015 I haven't decided yet. I mainly bought the mac mini for cached apps, so now the iPads actually update apps. I figure I may as well use it to its full potential on account of having bought it. I do like Meraki a lot though. I don't think profile manager will be as good / efficient. Might test it on like... 2 ipads

Joanne Posted October 6, 2015 Author Posted October 6, 2015 Yeah that sucks. I'm hoping to keep the numbers to <100 !! Although I thought that to get ALL the features of iOS 9 you needed to pay? I think that was why I was gonna look at profile manager. The whole locking down appeals to me. I'm going to update one of our sets next week once I get an app list off the staff.

Andie Posted October 14, 2015 Posted October 14, 2015 PUT INTERNET SHORTCUTS ON YOUR IPADS VIA MERAKI Go to System > MDM > Settings Choose your profile that you have assigned to your iPads. Click on the Web Clips tab. OMG THAT'S WHERE YOU DO THIS!!! Fill in as appropriate. [ATTACH=CONFIG]32138[/ATTACH] THIS HAS MADE ME SO HAPPY! To add a URL to the iPad desktop as an icon, using Configurator: In Prepare or Supervise, under Settings, double click the iPad profile name in the Profiles box. This allows you to edit the profile. In the left pane of the Profile edit window, scroll down to Web Clips and click on it. Enter the Label name (name you want the "app" to be called). Enter the URL and browse for an icon (you can create a jpeg from a screenshot for this if there isn't one provided by the website). There are other options to play with as well. Add as many as you need (we have set up Espresso and Purple Mash) - extra ones are added by clicking the plus symbol top right of Web Clip pane. When you update the iPads the web clip will appear on the desktop with your chosen icon, just like an app. 2
Andie Posted October 14, 2015 Posted October 14, 2015 With iOS 9 apparently you can push iOS updates sorta like Windows Updates and schedule them at certain times (like 3am) so updates while their asleep Any idea if doing it that way means you aren't greeted with the Hello setup screen when you open the iPad? If so, any idea how you do the pushing out on schedule? Having updated to iOS9 recently in the usual way, I found you still have to set them all up from Hello afterwards - big job with 60 iPads! Considering how many schools are now using iPads you would think Apple would be putting more work into making the managing of them better....
Joanne Posted November 11, 2015 Author Posted November 11, 2015 Apple Server and Profile Manager Setup As I may have mentioned earlier in this thread, I have invested in a £400 Mac Mini and bought apple server app for it. I am currently going through the setup and this is my documentation of it. I hope it will help someone else. I am on El Capatain and I have the latest version of the Server app installed (as of November 2015). Initial Server Setup When you first install the server app, setup your password to get into it and all that jazz. You will then be presented with a screen which has a list of things down the left. First thing to do is definitely ENABLE CACHING. This will mean that when you want to update apps, they download from this here mac mini instead of teh internetz! Second thing to do is switch on 'Profile Manager'. Add your deets for VPP and DEP. I've just discovered the root of this bit which has made me pause to start writing this! Once you've set things how you like them, you can move over to your PC. HURRAY! This made me glad, because I have THE WORST keyboard and mouse attached to me mac mini! Type the mac name into your browser address bar. So for me: https://mac-server.domain.sch . Enter the username and password which you setup earlier. ET VOILA! You are IN! I have created 2 Enrollment Profiles (KS1 and KS2) as I am planning on having different apps on each bank. Then I've created 2 Device Groups (KS1 and KS2) and this is where you can change all the gritty settings for iOS. Go through them all and change what you need. I changed the following: Device Groups - Settings General - Profile can be removed with authorization Network - added wifi network Restrictions Functionality- disabled facetime, disabled iMessage, Disabled Siri, Require password for app store purchases, Disable all iCloud stuff, Disable allow erase all content, Disable all the allow modifying ones (account settings, cellular, device name, find my friends, passcode, restrictions, wallpaper), disable spotlight suggestions, disable allow touch ID to unlock device, disable allow pairing with apple watch, disable notifications, today, notifications and control centre in lock screen. Apps- disabled everything here apart from use of safari. Media Content- changed to UK and disabled the allow explicit content, but allow all on the dropdown boxes. (This is mainly because I don't want potential issues in the future). Device Groups - Apps So here is the bit that links to your VPP and your purchased apps reside here. This makes me excited because this is the 100% legit way of putting them on. BUT - only the ones that you chose 'Managed Licenses' will appear. Previously I have used redemtion codes for Meraki. Not sure if I can somehow get them converted or whatever... or maybe install them in Configurator before hand. Can't help but feel that I'm going overkill by using Configurator AND Profile manager... Add a Device So to add a device to Profile Manager you need to go on it and browse to the http://mac-server.domain.sch/profilemanager login, then click enroll this iPad. There is a way to upload a list of iPads in a csv file, instructions can be found on the mac with the server app, click on 'find out how to add clients to profile manager' button in the profile manager tab thingy. A full on instruction book comes up and you can find out more info there. I'm going to keep it simple though for now and do it on the device. Add Devices to Groups Click Device Groups on the left. Click on the group you want to add a device to. Then click the Third plus from the left and add devices. So this is as far as I've got today. I'm going to have a go at updating a bank of iPads to iOS 9.1 using apple configurator 2.1 and then adding them to profile manager. WISH ME LUCK! I'll post again with my findings. 1
