Googles own website states : Google Apps Edition To purchase Vault: Education : Google Apps Vault and the other auditing enhancements will be automatically added to Google Apps for Education accounts by the end of the year. Google will contact you when these updates are complete. Apparently the release schedule has been delayed by a month. Aim is now to roll it out by end of January.

enjay Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 We are, in effect, using Google for our backups, as we have moved all our Shared Areas to Google Drive, and encourage staff to use that instead of their My Documents folder too. I will feel a lot happier about this once Google Vault is released though! DR backup is provided by a DFS link to a server in a remote datacentre, which houses mirrored DC and file servers, plus an app server and a print server. Our Internet connection is quite important to us....

Below is from Google : How retention works Retention rules enable your organization to retain user messages (email and on-the-record chat) for a desired amount of time. After messages are no longer in user mailboxes, these messages are marked to be expunged from all Google systems, including Vault. The period before expunge can be up to 30 more days beyond the retention period expiration. After they are expunged, these messages are no longer accessible from anywhere. Currently you cannot specify retention rules for files in Google Drive. Drive data that a user deletes from Trash is not retained.

I just tried this by using Vault to find a file I had in my drive. Vault found it. I then deleted the file from my drive and also from the trash. Vault then failed to find the file the second time.
Tall_Paul Posted February 5, 2015 Posted February 5, 2015 Is it just me or is it not very intuitive? I've had a quick play and set up a retention rule and a 'Matters' but I don't really know what I'm doing. The online documentation seems pretty woeful too.

Tall_Paul Posted February 5, 2015 Posted February 5, 2015 Did a bit of googling and found this site which, whilst it is almost two years old, gives a nice summary of what Google Vault is and isn't. In summary, it isn't a backup solution, more an audit-type solution.
