Nice! I wondered what Google would do after Microsoft gave all Office 365 for Education users 1TB each.

Drive for Education will be available to all Google Apps for Education customers at no charge and will include:

 

  • Unlimited storage: No more worrying about how much space you have left or about which user needs more gigabytes. Drive for Education supports individual files up to 5TB in size and will be available in coming weeks.
     
  • Vault: Google Apps Vault, our solution for search and discovery for compliance needs, will be coming free to all Apps for Education users by the end of the year.
     
  • Enhanced Auditing: Reporting and auditing tools and an Audit API easily let you see the activity of a file, are also on the way.

Great news, now if there was only an easy way to map drive letters to google storage...

ExpanDrive enables you to map drives to Google Drive. It's not cheap, but it is easy though.

 

I wonder if you could also use Arq to backup Macs to Google Drive? :)

Brains ticking over about this, wonder if I can use it for offsite backups....

 

This is what I was thinking too. Could you, for instance, sign up for GAFE and use this facility purely for your backup system? eg. without moving your school to a Google Apps based setup.

I guess you could. Not aware of any T&C that suggests you can only use GAFE if you use the gmail app.

 

Usual caveats apply though. You'd need to ensure your ICO register was up to date to explain that you are storing information outside of the EEA.

Install Google drive sync on server, compress files with a password into a dated folder, then schedule a sync on that folder.....

 

That's the type of thing I was thinking. Google do encrypt the files in transport and now on their servers too.

We were discussing this here yesterday. What we figured would be best was basically "cloud backed" local storage, i.e. a Windows file server that magically syncs its files with Google Drive. There seems to be a number of applications around that support syncing multiple user's file areas, but they seem to charge on a per-user basis, typically around $25 USD, so for 150 staff and 400 pupils that's around £8,500, which is a bit much. Google's Drive API does seem very well documented and pretty easy to get than hang of, though, so I was rather thinking I might write my own syncing script.

No, I hadn't seen that one. Their website doesn't seem to mention specific support for Windows user areas. We could use the Google Drive sync client running on our file server as the admin user to sync all our shared file areas with Google Drive. However, we want users to be able to see their own files where they should be when they log in to Google Drive, the same as they would when they log in to Windows. Users should be able to seemlesly switch between Windows and Google Apps, or even use both at the same time if that's what they want.

Went live for us yesterday too. Interestingly, the Google Drive Sync client reports an upper limit of 10TB rather than simply unlimited, but I'll worry about that when one of our teachers can explain to me how they plan to sync more than 10TB to their laptop.

Anyone thought about creating a single 'master' Google apps account and installing the Google drive app to the root of the file server and moving all the server data into this root folder?

This would give you a standard file server with all the data and network shares and onsite backups etc but also sync with the cloud.

 

This would also be a good way to migrate over to the cloud as you could run both in parallel for a while and then get everyone to just access cloud files. You would still be able to create onsite backups if needed.

 

What do you think?

Just checked and our domain has unlimited storage. Alas looks like maximum file size is 1Tb which puts a dampener on using it for off site backups.

You have 1Tb files ? I was considering just syncing my backups once a week just so there's an off site backup, it would be difficult to restore without downloading everything (I use rar files which are split into 50MB chunks)

VHD images mostly. I suppose for user files a encrypted 7zip archive split into suitable volumes would work, I wouldn't want to just dump 4Tb of user files on there totally unencrypted. Not sure I trust the cloud that much.
