Primary school server rooms

At last place which was a small independent school with 400 students and 60 staff we had a small room big enough for a small desk and a 42U rack. One air conditioning unit but the room had a window that could be opened. Enough room to walk down both sides of the rack and get to the back with comfort, just.

 

The rack housed SAN, Core Switch, routers and various servers plus some UPS units.

The majority of primary schools I work in kit is all over the place. I have one with a small wallmounted cabinet n a classroom, file server in a cupboard the other side of the school and the internet coming in to the building in a different place! What ever and where ever in most cases.

600 Pupils, 100 Staff. Server room is 2m*3.7m

 

Air conditioned via a Mitsubishi Mr.Slim, houses physical DC, VM Host and APC Smart-UPS in a 42U Rack. Have a few switches in the rack too.

 

I store all sorts of computing bits and bobs in the room as there are some worktops with cupboards below.

 

5 Comm Boxes dotted around for other switch gear.

 

I currently work in the server room but have been given an office on the other side of the site to work from once its refurbed. Will be glad to get away from the noise and chilly air con output

When fully occupied I think our school is due to allow 700 pupils max now we have had the new bits added. That room took some doing to get it agreed and convincing about the requirement for the aircon. Key was a document on small server room cooling from APC I think it was saying what was required for particular heat outputs. After that it was a matter of keep pushing all the time to get what I wanted...as far as possible. Shouldn't really matter if the school is primary or secondary, its what is required that counts. Fortunately we have risen out of the server under a desk stage...went to servers in a cupboard after that....but has taken 10 years and a new building addition though!
