Bitlocker on Windows 8 Tablet Devices

I have searched all over t'interwebs for an answer to this but I cannot seem to find one so I was wondering if any fellow Edugeekers would be able to help me.

 

We have a Dell Venue 8 tablet running Windows 8.1 and we are able to Bitlock the device, however the options for unlocking were to either enter a USB stick at start-up or have it automatically unlock. I was wondering if anybody knows when Bitlocker is set to automatically unlock whether the drive will remain encrypted until the user logs in with a password (like on iPads with PIN entry) or not?

The drive is always encrypted, bitlocker prevents them removing the drive and extracting the data as the TPM chip is supposed to be the only thing that has the key. The TPM enables the bios to boot windows from the encrypted drive which leads to the normal windows os security and because in theory only windows can write to the drive via tpm people cant gain access to the files. If you dont have a TPM module built in you can use a usb stick to perform the action of holding the key. Bitlocker does not replace normal windows username password security.

 

Disable USB though for proper security given the very recent HID vector if you want increased protection.
