iOS 8 and Automatic Enrollment

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

So, iOS 8 came out last week along with a new version of Apple Configurator and OS X Server both of which are supposed to introduce support for it. I thought it'd probably be the sensible thing to do to download it and see how it works.

I'm sure that your sides are splitting right now.

Anyway, moving swiftly on.

There is a setting in Configurator to make your device enrol automatically in an MDM. All you have to do is give it a URL. After a false start where I noticed that iOS 8 needs a special wireless profile all of its own to get started, I tried to use the enrollment profile that I had created for iOS 7 for iOS 8. I restored a brand shiny new iOS image onto my sacrificial goat iGoat iPad and away we went. All went well until it got to the "I can configure your iPad" screen. It just said this:

Cue gnashing of teeth

The really infuriating thing is that I know it's not my OS X Server or Profile Manager that's the problem because I can enrol the iPad manually by going to https://{server_url}/mydevices. The certificate that the server is using is a self signed one but the iPad trusts the root. I'm guessing that Apple have changed the enrolment URL, at the moment it's set to https://{server_url}/devicemanagement/mdm/dep_mdm_enroll.

Tried it with an iPad Mini and an iPad Retina, same on both.

Anyone have any idea what it may have been changed to?

Cheers

FWIW, now that I've updated to Server 3.2.2 and iOS 8.1, this issue seems to have been fixed. Edited by Norphy
