[sims] SQL migration "Login failed: Reason 0"

I have fixed this in the past with the following. Then again we have a weird setup too:

 

On the client machine with SIMS client installed:

1) Check the network drive for the SIMS network share is mapped properly.

2) Check the connect.ini file in C:\Program Files\Sims\Sims .net\ is pointing to the SIMS network share. We have to modify it manually as the default one throws up errors.

3) Also try editing the connect.ini file so it just has the bit in brackets and below it a line saying Redirect= followed by the path to your SIMS network share (using mapped drives, not networking UNC). MIS told us to do this, I don't know what it does but back up the original connect.ini in Program Files!

4) Check C:\Windows\sims.ini is also pointing to the network share (again, use the path via the mapped drive not netowrking UNC).

 

Not sure what it fixes but it works for me when people ask for help with this error.

Still getting error 0 on 2003 so I am at a real loss..

 

We are now considering getting our LEA in to do this...

 

Is it me or does sims seem really clunky at the backend..........

make sure the sql server service is running under the localsystem account.

yep services are running under localsystem...

 

but our "live" server is running under a network user

my user owns and has full control of ALL files in the simsroot share..

Hi Brett,

 

Strange - If when you ran dbupgrade and the server and database names weren't populated it means it hasn't been able to get the details from your 'central' connect.ini. (even on a re-direct it should pick them up).

 

But then again it must be finding something when you run sims.net or you'd get a 'incorrect connect.ini error' rather than a reason 0. (just tried it out)

 

Might be worth trying to take the 'connects' out the equation and copying the [sIMSCONNECTION] details out of the central connect.ini so that the copy local to SIMS .net contains the 'ServerName' and 'DatabaseName' values.

 

Then try juggling round with IP/machine names in the connection details.

with 172.16.1.4\SIMS2005 get invaild user name/password

 

(and I have set the user in the sql management studio)

ok done the deattach/reattach and still getting invaild pw... (at least the error as changed)

 

one thing I have noticed

 

Compairing my user (in the security of the sims database part of sql studio manager) I see on the new server my Default schema is dbo, but on the exisiting server its sims_itsupport ..

 

 

Wonder if thats any revelance..... could any one check what your settings are there?

I smell a DNS problem.

 

Check your DNS settings (reserve DNS as well?)

Try ipconfig /flushdns

Failing that add the record to C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts or just give up and use the IP address.

Well..

 

 

Its a brand new system... Tested dns and all seems good

 

I can

 

A) ping vs-sims

b) ping vs-sims.domain.local

c) nslookup vs-sims

 

all resolve to the right ips (tested from 3 machines)

I know i am replying to my self.. but

 

I am starting to wonder if its the DPM DB that we have restored.... so tonight I am going to connect to my sims server, detatch the DB copy it, then re-attach it..

 

couple of ?'s

 

A) is that safe

B) would it be a better option to stop the sql server, then just copy the db?

I tend to take backups and restore them when testing on other boxes, but from those 2 i'd probably say detaching and attaching would be "cleaner".

Usually use dbattach for the backups, but its all the same thing.

Just built a Windows 2008 server and having the same problems. Did attaching the latest database work for you?

We are getting reports of Reason 0 on SQL Express. There is something odd with memory allocation that we are getting assistance on from MS. Please log a support call so that we get your case recorded.

I am using SQL 2005 not express.

 

Is the error to do with AWE memory management? If so there are options within the management studio to enable and control memory allocation.

 

I am going to rebuild the server (again) and request the latest guide from Capita to see if the August 2008 is missing something out.

 

For example, is the install folder S:\SIMS or S:\SIMSROOT\SIMS or does it matter as long as I share S:\ as SIMSROOT? Or does it not matter where I install SIMS as long as SIMS.ini and Connect.ini can see it?

Also, What roles need to be enabled on the server to ensure SIMS will run? Are there compatibility issues with .net framework 3.5 or SQL 2005 sp3?

You can see why it does not seem to be straightforward.

Possibly unrelated, but I've had the Reason 0 error when a) the server has been low on disk space, b) the SQL services were being hammered by RM's RMC3IEngine throwing its toys out the pram, and c) when S: wasn't mapped correctly.

Spoke to a very helpful Guy at Capita (They have a few real shining stars....and then the rest ). He talked me through the mapping which I have implemented, no luck.

 

The server has around 600gb free, Xeon quad with 8gb. The problem is definately with SIMS.

 

I now have around 15 fixes to work through before I ring Capita again. I'll let you know what happens.

I am having the same problem, any advise on how to get round/sort it is appricated. here is what I have done to date

(This is on a new sims server on a brand-new domain)

 

 

SIMS Connection failed for login ITAdmin , reason: 0

if so you need to edit the connect.ini file on the SIMS server so it ONLY referes to the Internal IP address of the SIMS server NOT the server name to get it to work

how far did you get with this? as its happening here on a 2008 server 32bit sql 2005 full running out of ideas
